Carlisle here from 4WD Touring Australia
« on: May 20, 2018, 10:34:06 AM »
Hey guys!
I'm not really new here...but I've been pretty hectic with work and life the last couple of years, so haven't been online much. I used to edit Camper Trailer Australia from its inception until the 50th issue. I left to start up 4WD Touring Australia in 2012 and we're still going strong. We're dropping the 6th series of TV in June and I'm working on the 73rd issue of the magazine this month.
I've got five kids (just had triplets about a year and a half ago), and we haven't gotten everyone camping together yet, but I'm looking forward to that soon. Probably going to need one of those Jayco toy haulers with like 10 bunks in the back.
Just wanted to say hello and hopefully hang out a bit more.
Thanks guys!
Carlisle

Good to hear from you again Carlisle and welcome back. Congrats on the triplets, thats about the max people limit for a 4wd and i dont think you can get a tour bus some of the places you go

Hi Carlisle
Good to see you back here, hopefully you will be able to get the whole family back out camping. Once they aren’t in nappies full time, it’s much easier. I think I took my boy out camping the first time when he was about 20 months old, the girl was 3 and it was also her first trip. The gaps between camping were bigger while they were small, as it takes more planning. However now they are 7 and 9 and Love to go camping as often as possible :-)

Thanks guys!

I took my first one camping heaps when he was a baby...but that was just one.

The plan is to take a couple of 4WDs with at least a camper trailer on any big trips in the future. Plenty of storage that way, and impossible to fit everyone and everything into one vehicle.

Everyone keeps telling me to make a show called 'Touring with Triplets'.

I think those that don't require the third row seating in a 4wd don't really appreciate the space struggles of big families. Not only do you lose most of the space in the vehicle, just taking enough bedding to keep everyone warm etc takes up multiples of the space it does for couples.

My advice would be either a step through soft floor if you want a camper or as you say a toy hauler if you want a van.

If grandparents are into camping as well, then many hands make light work, and with triplets, you could do with all the help you can get.

I personally find non-touring camping a bit more enjoyable too, otherwise it's a lot of effort setting up and packing down for that many.

Hi Carlisle,

Was wondering what you were up to..

Jim - have a look at one of our mags. Definitely more of a travel mag than a 4WD mag. We try to cover destinations that it helps to have a 4WD to get to, but we always cover places that are just great destinations too, no matter how you get there.

TRIPLETS!!
No wonder you have been hectic.

Good to see you back  :cup:

5 kids camping.....hmmm...Trackshack with one side for the adults and chuck all the rugrats on the other side

Just get'em out camping and the details will take care of themselves.
Getting there if half the fun

The other half is a cold beer when you do.

Do they even still make TrakShaks? I remember taking photos of one of those about 12 years ago (maybe more). I thought they'd disappeared.

Yeah, will no doubt be on here asking questions about potty training in the bush or something...

Wow Carlisle 5 is impressive! We have 3 and it has made getting our seriously less frequent. I managed to get our 2 girls out last July for their first camping trip aged 6 and 4 but the little guy hasn't been yet (he's just turned 2). Winter in the Brindabellas was a baptism of fire for the girls but they loved it so much they keep asking when we're going next.

Good luck getting back out there more.
