Post by: griz066 on April 07, 2011, 11:39:37 AM
So is Rays Outdoors owned by Super Retail Group? Just like BCF & SCA?

I personally think they are all overpriced....except when they have a sale on.....then their prices come down to where they should have been all along !!

No competition anymore.....they own all the competition !!

And Anaconda is owned by Spotlight.
If possible I try and buy from Camping Country or online.

I've noticed over the last few years the stock has moved very much down market. You used to be able to buy the better quality brands eg. Webber etc, but now it seems to be all cheap chinese stuff. Even the clothing and shoes have become cheap quality.
With them and BCF almost next to each other in some areas it will be interesting to see if a similar situation arises like Borders and Angus & Robertson. At least Aussie Disposals has always been cheap.

At least Rays will price match eBay where BCF said no way as their prices are dictated from head office...

I got a 40litre Weaco price matched with the same item on eBay saved me $200....   Good on ya Ray's  bad BCF

A lot of Rays were shutdown and the rest are being rebranded to Macpac. SRG wanted a 'discount' camping brand BCF, and a 'premium' camping brand Macpac. They didn't see the Rays brand in that strategy.

Same company, I was told by an employee at a DFO outlet, own Kathmandu, and now have a large % of their gear made in China, and the quality has gone down heaps.

Our local Rays is good. Well, the staff are. Bought hubby a Nanopresso ages ago and they price matched a product that was CHEAPER than the one I’d found online. It’s also convenient, like the time I decided I really must have a jaffle iron the morning we were heading somewhere

I notice in the BCF catalogues a lot of the gear is now very cheap and looks like 4x4 supacentre stuff...

As far as camping stores go I honestly prefer Tentworld. Miss having their store in Windsor, but that is what it is and no one saw that coming...

Often find a way to make it work stopping in at Ipswich or Brendale Tentworld stores when we need something.

Race to the bottom.... the desire for cheap stuff is going to be the problem.

There is some stuff that is just about identical - the XTM 9" driving lights are one example, and are priced to compete quite closely.

Macpac has been very ordinary for the last 10 years, really since they started selling directly rather than via proper stores; in Australia that gap has been filled to an extent by One Planet, but Macpac really traded on their name for a long time and used the standard Australian pricing model of charge like a wounded bull 3 out of 4 weeks in the month, and put everything on a "special" for 1 week which is when it was a sensible price.

I actually have an old Macpac Pursuit pack back in the UK that's 20 years old; it's a great pack for how I used it, which was for everything from travelling around working to 3 day walking expeditions.

I managed to get an old Summit Gear pack recently for $10 here, and that's now become my everyday pack instead of the Blackwolf pack I got when a Rays Outdoors was closing on the Central Coast a few years ago. Much better canvas - like my old Macpac - and hardly any fancy things; in fact it had a broken buckle so they got replaced with metal OnePlanet clips instead. Should be good for a few more years yet....

sadly this x lots.. I think battle to sell the cheapest Shit is in full swing.

Said it before, the loss of quality is the price we pay for everyone wanting things like a 80ltr car fridge for $100
