Has anyone had any experience with these 12v ceiling fans, with the weather heating up I thought they might be a good way of keeping cooler in the camper, they seem cheap enough at $12.58ea but nut sure how much they would hurt when you accidentally put your hand in one. They have a diameter of 50cm and a draw of about 0.7A so I think that would probably suit a camper.


 

They do sell ones with speed controllers for about double the price (which is still cheap) and would probably be safer as you could turn it down to a suitable speed but I am guessing that they are just a variable resistor and, it would be more energy efficient (and cheaper) to build one using a little PWM controller like one of these and put it in a box like this

or just writing them off because they are cheap?

I looked at those fans - but did not buy because I perceived the price as "too cheap"... 

Settled with 2 of these units



I have them mounted onto a short inverted T piece (opposite each other) - and this is hanging off the centre rail of the awning.

Having big blades - they work really well;  stirring up a lot of air and helping to keep the bugs at bay...   

Though they don't draw a lot of amps - (2 x 1.5amp/hr);  battery consumption is not a biggy for my set up...

Interesting topic....fans......not sure how the mexicans go, but in NSW, we rarely have a hot night camping....not by 10pm or later ?

I could imagine in northern queensland it might be muggy of a night.....but in those conditions, does a fan make a lot of difference ??

we just put up a spreader bar above our bed, hook it on with velcro tape and have it on all night.  works a treat and makes a huge difference in the humid weather.

it's not too loud and doesn't draw much power.  i changed the alligator clips to anderson powerpoles...

seriously considering getting another one.

Not so much the heat but the stillness that kills you. I brought one of these and is fantastic.

3 speeds, moves the air really well and keeps you sleeping nicely

Power Levels: LOW- 1.7AMPS, MED - 2.3 AMPS, HIGH - 3.0 AMPS

Keeping the air moving beats it not moving at all.

Camp in the Queensland humidity for a while and you'd appreciate any air movement.

Thanks for that, its just what I was looking for. Generally, I really don't like pedestal fans but like ceiling fans so a lot of the other options don't really interest me. A couple of questions
Do you worry about sitting up in the middle of the night and getting yourself with it or is it small/light enough that it wouldn't do any damage?
Do you find the speed ok or would it be better if you could adjust it?

Not so much the heat but the humidity as others have said. It's the same both living and camping in QLD the breeze normally stops at night so it feels a whole lot more muggy. A fan moving the air around can make a big difference.

Ive had one for quite some time now & its great. It uses a brushless BLDC motor & you wont get hurt if you do get caught with the blades. The comments of you get what you pay for these days just doesnt always cut it.

Got a couple of these , they work well and are quiet too .. And yep , I've got it to contact my person twice now , no pain but makes sure I'm awake!!!

I've been camping for approx 250 times and I'd say 2 times it's been "hot" come sleep time.....nothing a couple of extra beers didn't fix !!  ;D

Looks like they use a stepper motor inside which if so means my idea for a speed controller wouldn't work.

Yeah just noticed that too although I was a bit peeved I'd paid more like the $60 for mine some time back and that was a reasonable price compared to some. Good clickbait to get you looking at their site I guess.
