Tig Welder ~ Advice
« on: September 20, 2013, 04:22:00 PM »
My beautiful bride is going to get me an extra special present for my birthday this year, the big 4-0 is upon us :)
Looks like the workshop might see a new toy  ;D

Have any of you guys own / use / know about the 4 in 1 Tig / Plasma AC/DC units?

I have been researching this afternoon and its getting confusing.

It will only be recreational use, not going to be be undertaking any major boat building exercises or such. Maybe an Aluminium top for MK2 camper if I get good enough.

Does anyone know about these units?

Thanks in advance

Yes, I did, not looking at buying off them, bad rap. Was a good link to show what I am talking about.

I am hoping someone will know a little more than me.

Looks like I would be better off with either a plasma cutter or a TIG welder, not both in one unit from my research so far.

I have a tig like that. I bought it several years ago and it has done heaps of AC work welding alloy and works very well.

It is not very good in DC mode. It's leads get hot. So hot in fact I have changed the leads but it still gets hot after a short while in DC. It's still ok for handy man stuff, just not big work.

But in AC You can crank it all day with no issues.

I haven't used the plasma on it so can't give any feedback on that.

For the record I paid less than $500 at the time from a supplier on eBay and it is pretty much identical to the welder in your link.

Not a virus, not a re-install, not a format, not an issue since 2011..once you go mac you never go back

Here's an old pic I took for some reason when I first bought it and used it on alloy, nothing special but more than adequate for what I use it for.

Thanks Danny. I talked to my mate who is a boiler maker / fabricator. After some humming & harring decided to go with this, Plasma cutter will come later on.

Hopefully I can gets some welds like the ones in your pics happening soon.  :D
