12v Electric blanket ??

Anybody use a 12v electric blanket,

Are they any good/worthwhile/decent?

I have a couple, BIG W had them for sale a while back $10 each.

They are 12v and draw about 3.9amps, they are only 1.5x1.2m from memory but they do work.

"Auger" or something like that was the brand.

Haven't used a 12V but 240V blankets pull around 100-200W, so for the 10 minutes it takes to heat up the bed they could easily be run from an inverter.

Try hot water bottles in the bed....cheaper and far less current draw.

You know your on a forum with old folk when you hear talk of electric blankets  ;D

Some horizontal folk dancing with the wife warms my bed up nicely and makes for a great nights sleep...........

Yeah ive got one, works pretty good. The only problem with them is they dont have a heat setting control, just straight on-off. So we generally heat the bed up then turn it off when we get in, other wise you'll fry your arse off.

SWMBO wants leccy blankets for her and the ruggies, she reckons hot water bottles are ok but in the morning when its really cold the hotties aren't much help anymore and im not gettin my arse frozen off to get out and heat them up again, so it looks like roughing it is rapidly going out the window. :( :( ::) :-X

The things you do to get the family out camping these days :-[ :'( ??? ??? ???

But as we havn't got any yet wich is better overall 12 or 240  ???

For medical reason my wife, Jan has had major surgery to her right leg and has a bit of metal and other things in the leg.  For this reason she likes the temp to be a nice even average temp.  for a long time we where looking for a 12v blanket for travelling so she can keep the leg warm but the rest of her be comfortable.  After talking to a friend at Orange he told us the servo at Mount Lambie sells a 12v blanket for about $20.  He was using it in his truck at night.   With a detour to our planned route we went to Mount Lambie and got one.  Unlike the link about there were no controls, just on or off.  The heating area was pretty small but the polar fleece blanket, about the same size worked a treat for Jan on the remainder of the trip through the cold.

If you have an aversion to cold in the vehicle they work pretty good.  As for under bed, good old body heat works wonders

hello, jan here - making my very first post.  the first thing you will notice between my posts and al's is that i spell correctly (most of the time!! ;D)

POD thankyou for the link you posted, i ordered the last of the blankets available from there....yes, i know i already have a 12v blanket, but i like this one because it has variable heat settings and a timer.  i PARTICULARLY like THIS one because it's about a 1/3 of the price of the Australian site al first found, even with postage from Britain.

so with my new electric blanket, a bottle of rum and lots of cups of tea, i reckon i'll be set for the june long weekend camping we plan on doing.  i can sit around and laugh at the frost this year

Hi,

One of my fellow campers and I both bought 12v electric blankets, without controllers, from a supplier in Melbourne.  They were blue polar fleece.  They worked for a little while but they would get hotspots.  Hers actually burnt a hole in their sheet and mattress protector and mine has scorched my sheets as I usually didn't have it on for as long.  Perhaps with the temp regulator and timer they may be good.  Be aware please.

I have obviously disposed of mine and we are putting a normal electric blanket on to run from our inverter.  I also swear by hot water bottles.  I found some quilted faux suede covers from here:  http://www.coffeecosy.com.au  and the bottle stays warm most of the night and it's not cold in the morning.

I used to have a 12v elect blanket.. I used it once, found it rubbish.. I went with a doonah...

But if I was to go to Mawsons Station, I'd go with Hot water bottles...

For the 5am freeze fill spare waterbottles with water from a thermos. not need to even get out of the bed.

That's why we only use it in the vehicle as needed.  The timer and controller will make it a lot better but still would not use it to warm a bed
