I should never assume but i did
« on: December 09, 2013, 07:51:22 PM »
Went into buy a another 40 lt engel fridge/freezer to day ,walked into rays outdoors and saw all the new engel fridge boxes lined up walked over to look at price and was taken back a little when i read Made in Thailand on all the boxes  I always thought they were made in Japan. Not that it matters as the one i have already is 2 years old has not missed a beat and it also was made in Thailand ..
The best price I have come across is $1299 with a transit bag for the gold anniversary as well as the silver one both of which are going for that price at BCF

Your not thinking of buying an imported product...... My god how could you.  :D :D :D

On a serious note it pays to shop around as there are a lot more brands worth considering.

Yes i have shopped around went to two repair companies who fix  the 12 volt fridges we all talk about as well. Now not wanting to start a war ,my fridge is better than yours  etc etc at the repair shops i could retire if i had a dollar for each fridge that was Not a engel and i would have to keep working till i die if i had a doller for each engel in there.May be i just went to both repairers on the wrong day  lol. but not according to the service men.

The thing that made me only look at Engels when I was buying a fridge was the stories of 10, 20 even 25+ year old models having never missed a beat. How could you argue with that?

Then I realised they stopped making them in Japan a few years ago so IMO all those stories became irrelevant and price and features had a lot more weight in the new equation.

I ended up with the new ARB version and haven't regretted it yet. Time will tell if I will but either way I'm hardly going to lose sleep over the outcome.

My 39 litre Engel is about 20 years old.   It lives in the back of the truck (it's now riding in its fourth four wheel drive) and more often than not it's running.   I tend to turn it off in summer as the short drive to and from work doesn't keep the aux battery sufficiently charged but in winter I don't bother switching it off.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to where it was made.  I can remember when I was a young pup that "Made in Japan" was an indication of cheap, nasty junk - usually a knock-off of something from Europe.  After that it was "Made in Hong Kong", "Made in Korea", "Made in China" etc, yet all these countries now make quality products.

If the company with their name on the product is trusted and cares about their reputation (which Engel certainly do), where the product is made seems irrelevant.

Everything is made to a price, you can be lucky or unlucky, partner just spent mega
dollars on an SLR, faulty out of the box!

As for fridges, I have a 6 year old waeco never missed a beat,
mate has a probably 8 year old now evakool also no probs.

He purchased a waeco about a year ago no probes with it either.

That could mean that there's 10 times as many Engels out there.
Yes I am a bit biased, but seeing I've had my Engel now for over 15 years without it missing a beat, I think I can be :)
