What petrol & 2 stroke do you run in your power equipment?
« on: January 30, 2011, 06:24:43 PM »
Throwing out a question to the myswag community.

Recently purchased a new Stihl Leafblower (BG66 for those interested). What oils and petrol do you guys use with your garden equipment? I usually run just your standard Castrol or Pentrite 2T with regular unleaded. Some have told me to use premium others have said not to as it burns to hot in the little cylinder. I also drop the oil in the 4T mower every year....

Am I mad, please tell me...maybe I should service them every Olympics or until they stop!

Awaiting your responses!

I have Echo gear and use BP Ultimate and Echo 2-stroke mix. I mix it fresh for the chainsaw and the blower gets the old stuff. The brushcutter and mower are 4 stroke Hondas.

I was told by a mechanical friend to use premium, not the E10 stuff as the ethanol is not good for 2-strokes apparently.

As for oil I got a bottles of the stuff that Stihl give you when you buy their gear.  I have a Stihl whipper snipper and chainsaw so I've got 2 bottles, still haven't gone through one yet.

Back when i Had 2 stroke dirt bikes i used Avgas with Castrol TTS in my bike ans in all my 2 stroke power equipment. Now my dirtbike is a 4 stroke i use caltex vortex 98 with TTS at 50 to 1 in my 5 chainsaws, leaf blower 2x brushcutters and daughters pw50. For the amount you use a high quality oil is cheap insurance.

Yeah Symon, that E10 is rubbish for your 2T...I run the Stihl bar oil in my saw however my whipper snipper and old leaf blower are GMC brand. Snipper is still going strong, so is the old blower (except for the impella that flogged out). The saw does run the Castrol 2T and goes well....doesn't get any use cause this house doesn't have a fire...

Hear, hear Symon.  Another damm cyclone hitting the coast.  BUT, this one is small compared to the one that is still about 5 days out.

Hi,
I was lead to understand that the antiknock agents in the higher octane fuel fouled the plug, but I'm more than happy to be corrected on that.

I run ULP 25:1 with Stihl 2 stroke oil in my Stihl chainsaw and multi-tool, as recommended by the local Stihl sales/workshop, despite the official figures from Stihl being a more dilute 50:1.

I've been trying to kill a Ryobi whipper snipper on this mixture for about 15 years, but it won't lie down and die.

cheers

I also have an Echo chainsaw, the manufacturer recommend a specific 'octane' rating, just as they do in my Johnstone 2st outboard (92) normal regular fuel with 100/1 mix for the outboard with special oil

the chainsaw has done only 6 hours work, (will sell it)
so I don't remember the tech specs for it but it uses different oil, as one's water cooled other air cooled.

I decided to check a couple of my handbooks on this, and I think that is the best way to go on fuel mix.

Stihls have a tendency to oil up the plugs if you use the cheap 2 stroke oil in the mix..our backpack blower at work seems to have more power and better starting when we use the premium petrol and the 2 stroke oil recommended by stihl...this for commercial applications is not a cheap alternative, average cost is about 25 to 30% per tank more then an average blend. The upside is that the spark plug does'nt oil up as much, there is more power, better starting and a tank lasts about 15% longer.
