Many years ago my pride and joy was a (1978 I think) Volvo 244GL 2.1 Fuel injected Automatic. 90KW and 170nm torque I think. Our current vehicle has 165KW and almost 300nm of torque. I can honestly say that the Volvo was an outstanding safe car that probably had 250,000 + Kms. We towed our box trailer (500~600 Kg ?) with copious amounts of gear (2 adults and two children) to many strange places. The Blackdown tablelands with a very badly unsealed and rocky road (Central Qld) comes to mind. We were happy with progress (not fuel economy) and took our time to reach intended destinations safely above all else. Now we all appear to be chasing the holy grail of more torque/power etc. etc. Why are we in such a hurry nowadays? After all camping is meant to be a leisure activity!

Get a carby GQ with 35's, then you cant be in a hurry ;D ;D
-
Volvo's make me want to wear a cardigan, and 'more power' makes me want to get ink and belch.

Arr the old 244GL. After a range of Volvos, a couple of 122s, 1800s, 144, 142, 244 I would have to say that I liked the 244 the least.
Anyway
I think it is the mentality that the latest is the greatest.
Bit like computers, for most people the PC specs and performance that the average computer provided 5 years ago is still all that's needed to email and surf the net which is the most used feature.
-
because we are all so time poor we now only have time for 1-2 interests
so if the car is part of say camping or fishing/boating it gets more attention then it prob deserves
in the past money and time would have been directed elsewhere
-
We have had a string of Volvo's with the latest being an 850 with leather and a 2.5lt 5cyl.
Such a sweet car, if they are still that well built I will get another soon.
Truly the only car I felt comfortable falling asleep in while the wife drove ;D
Oh yeah, power and torque.
Getting there is a big part of the whole experience as you get older. I remember my kids at 6 and 8 on their first big roadtrip saying are we there yet, 2 minutes from home.

UIZ733,
Did you sell the hat with the Volvo or did you keep it ? ;D
Cheers Keith

There's no way you're being conned....
The pre dug fire pits are worth every dollar. >:D >:D >:D
-
Its all relative. Bigger trailers and heavier Vans = need more power and torque to tow the bastards
Plus the fact that faster cars pull more chicks mate  dont you know that. :cup:
Thats what its all about. EGO

I would have thought that a Volvo in OZ even in 1978 was probably a trend Euro Vehicle....bad example I think....lol
-
My first bush camping' book "Outback on a Budget" by a bloke named Sheedy who had been there / done that with a young family in the 1980s in the 'family cars', including a 'box' Volvo and an early Kingswood.
I'd prefer not so much of the electronic everything - including windows >:( - but I really love my air conditioning! ;D
-
Ah..the ol' Volvo Eh......time has moved on and in its place today is the - Prado. Yes the Prado comes with a bigger hat and larger noddy dog in the back ;D

Yeah, not safe to put dogs, nodding or otherwise in a Patrol..,the wheel might fall off or the motor may blow...lol

firstly, it was only the left hand side wheels that fell off. and secondly, they've given us nice nut indicators o we know when it's going to happen

We had a 244GL and were in a major accident where a van went straight into the passenger door (where I was sitting aged 12) at 60km/h. We all walked out - any other car and I would be fertilising daffodils right now.
As for speed - when my brother and I got our license and were young and dumb- we didn't think it was a slow car. We eventually killed the engine in that car - but it took a while.

My kids play a game called Volvo, bit like the old punch buggy. See a volvo on the road and scream out Volvo. You get bonus points for different volvos. So if we saw you towing a caravan on a volvo, there would certainly be shrieks of joy from my kids, especially for the 10pts they would get.

I should have indicated that when I bought the Volvo it was already 10yrs old with 150000k's on the clock. Held on to it for another 7yrs. and then stupidly :'( sold it for $250.00.
