Title: Closed the tip

Well that sucks for those wanting to make it to the tip, and once again the good people miss out because of the idiots that ruin stuff for everyone

They say they will not let you go past the crock tent, no longer go on to the tip it self.
I was going back up to the tip, if I could not actually go to the tip I would not bother going at all.

From reading the article, it would appear that they have got grounds for complaint about idiots, the same as everywhere :'( >:(

But that nasty, cynical bit of Fizzie >:D just has to pop up with the same question that it keeps asking about all these sort of Sacred places - how did you know, 40000 years ago, that this was the most northern tip of Australia ???

I did also notice though, that one of the complaints is that unregistered firearms are being used.

How do you know that they're unregistered, unless they're being used by a local ???

Or are you walking up to the pig-shooters & asking if their guns are legal ??? Not a great idea! :o ::)

From Cape York Awesome Aventures Facebook Group posted by Alina Milne Gilbert

I just spoke to Michael Solomon from Gudang/Yadhaykenu Aboriginal Corporation (the man quoted in all the news articles) on the phone.
He  said that YES the tip & Somerset (I didn't ask about other areas so can't comment on them) are currently 100% closed to tourists until further notice. I asked if he thinks it will be open for the tourist season & he said NO. He said they are working with the government to install toilets at Pinjaka & have the existing toilets at Somerset repaired. They are sick of everyone disrespecting the land & using it as a toilet!
EDIT - For those wondering. Punsand Bay & all other camp grounds will be open. From my understanding the road just north of the Croc Tent (where it forks off to Punsand on the left & the tip on the right is where access will be stopped.
I really hope that Michael (Gudang/Yadhaykenu Aboriginal Corporation) & the council can come to an agreement & the road will be opened but at this stage Michael has advised it is closed.
This is a crude map showing how far north you will be able to travel if this closure remains

A few thoughts,

I doubt there has been anything like the human traffic over the last 60,000 years there as there would have been in recent years with its growth in popularity.

It seems like that it is different from Ayres rock in that it isn't being closed for cultural reasons, it's due to people not taking care of it, similar to lots of other areas with the NPWS.

I haven't seen anyone disputing the claim that it is being trashed, equally, it's not a cemetery, people shouldn't be sticking plaques, spray painting RIP messages, etc on the rockfaces, it may be well-intentioned, but without permission, it's still just graffiti.

They seem to want to reopen it if it gets the facilities to cope with the numbers who are now visiting there, and people learn to respect it, going to a campsite/attraction where the bush is filled with bits of toilet paper is pretty disgusting, if I had to deal with this regularly I wouldn't be happy either.

For some reason, 4WDing and camping seems to attract it's fair share of ferals, I think anger directed towards the Elders would be better off directed towards those that don't take care of places.

From a PR perspective, it could be handled better, they would be better off mapping out what exactly is required by them to reopen it and keep it open, but that is just a side issue.

This was from only a few months ago https://youtu.be/0r70bdZjfGc (https://youtu.be/0r70bdZjfGc)

What a joke as my first trip to the Cape 20 years ago highlighted the locals disrespecting there own land just as much as tourists.  The old Ansett resort is a perfect example as they took it over because it was on 'sacred land' but within weeks it was trashed and became one big toilet. I wish I could find my photo but the old joke about a crack a tinnie tribe was so accurate as multiple times we came across areas (including next to the old resort) there the locals sat in a circle and threw there empty beer cans behind them. So after time a ring of hundreds of can about knee high were left behind for someone else to clean up.

We were also warned not to go into Bamaga at night because it was unsafe and even during the day had empty stubbies thrown towards the car.

They don't want tourists, but wonder how the the local economy would go if tourists stopped visiting?

They don’t need tourism if living off the govt’s coffers.

Good photo Bird and pretty close what I witnessed, but that must be the Victorian cousins with all those Green cans.

Off memory the Cape York tribe had piles of Brisbane Bitter (Because it was cheap) and XXXX, plus double the amount of cans compared to your photo.

In theses areas there are not just one people who own all the land, theirs a few different mobs and a couple of different council groups up until now the main big mob has got the loins share of government money and barge fares, and the TOs that own that tip bit have missed out on a lot of funding and have had bugger all say, but that is changing and shutting that area is is part of the process of change, Hope they get it sorted and get to manage there own lands, and it opens again, Craig

And this is the reason that an indigenous voice in the media, has nothing to do with First Nation peoples. Every MOB is in it for themselves, as they always have been. They are tribal, not a democratic society with a single voice for anything!

Sounds like the decision to close access to the tip will be reversed. But it is going to be at a cost. Access will be allowed after you pay for a pass to let you walk there.

Cape York Weekly

UPDATE: Tourists will pay an extra $10 on the Jardine River ferry to cover costs for toilets and other amenities. When the road is open, tourists will be able to access the Tip and have their photo taken.
------
BREAKING: The Tip of Cape York will remain OPEN in 2021 after a deal was struck between the NPA Regional Council and the Gudang/Yadhaykenu Aboriginal Corporation.
We told you all along not to believe the fake news being pedalled by the Cairns Post, who ran a deliberate scare campaign.
Now it's up to the tourists to do the right thing when they visit Cape York to make sure they leave the place better than when they arrived.

It's already the most expensive bit of water to cross in the world
The locals took to the original river crossing (South Bank) with a digger a while back so you have to use the ferry

UPDATE tourists will be able to access the Tip and have their photo taken.

We last visited the Cape 3 years ago and did the normal photo opportunity with the sign, but not long after our photo 5 or 6 aboriginal kids aged between 12 and 15 came along and used the sign and a big area around it to rest there fishing rods/gear and were about to walk off and explore.  Just then another group of tourists arrived and politely asked if they could move there gear for a photo. The kids just started yelling at the tourists and telling them to F off and threatened them if they moved there fishing gear.

So unfortunately that group didn't get the photo they traveled weeks to get  >:(

I’d have grown their gear in the tide
And then them if they wanted to push it
Most of the rubbish I’ve seen up there is from locals
Although the toilet paper everywhere can’t be blamed on them
For gods sake people burn the paper (wild dogs dig it up and it goes everywhere)

I was in Mapoon, Napranum and Weipa this week.  None of these areas are locked or are going to be locked.  Although they heard the B/S stories in the Paper and on social media that have no idea who started the rumours. Mapoon already has received a number of bookings for Easter and there are people at Pennefarther right now.

I was in NPA 3 weeks ago.  They were never going to lock tourists out either. The toilets are getting built as there have been complaints that there are no facilities there.

I am not worried about the added cost as I have been at the top a few times , but I do blieve is that thre should be a fee , say $100 dollars per vehicle , to use the Tele Track . This could help with the maintaince and upgrades of the track , toilets at several of the camping areas and so forth . The amount of Shit that is laying around at these camp spots is beyond belief .

Go on run me down for my comment , call me a wanka if you want , but if you have been down this track you will uderstand where I am coming from .

Good call Duggie, only caveat would be that it has to be actualy spent on doing that and proper accountable books be kept on income and expediture, plus taxed as in line with any other business .

100% agree Duggie.  Thankfully you and I got to see it I it’s prime.  These days the track is littered with broken discarded camping chairs, broken gazebos, rubbish and toilet paper.

I dont think anyone would have an issue with the  $100 per convoy *IF* it was put back into the maintenance, dunnys etc, but we all know it wouldn't be.
