Had to put this video up!!! We owned a 1988 model and we use to take it places most other 4WD would back away from. But back in those days the build quality was poor, why well they use to get paid two bottles of vodka a day 8)

I cant beleive Brock actually endorsed the Lada what was he thinking.I beleive they were pretty good offroad.We actually test drove a secondhand one and sh...t ourselves on the testdrive couldnt wait toget it back to the owner.

Your right they are a very capable little truck, If you can keep them together long enough.
Have been a few places in one, a lot of more common trucks didnt get too..

My younger bro got one as his first ever brand new car. . . . It had caught on fire before he got it the 5 blocks home!!!!!!
Having said that it was amassing where it would go. Leavings he old FJ Crusers & Hiluxes in its wake.

If my memory serves me correct a Fiat 124 twin cam head bolted on nicely with a brace of Webbers hanging of the side, made for a nice power upgrade ..
Front diff needed an external brace cage to help it survive the rough stuff off road..

They ran two in the safari that had 6cyl engines in them.

I think my uncles were responsible for that fiasco. Uncle 1 had the Lada dealership in Redcliffe and Uncle 2 was good mates with Brock,..........must have taken alot of piss to get him to to that............................we used to take them up the beach when we were groms......if they didn't break down they'd go anywhere....my sister had one as her first car.

Nothing wrong with Lada Nivas. They received a bad rap because of an ignition distributor and module different to the OS models because of pollution regulations (they used one from a camira I believe, such a reliable donor), which made them stop under hot conditions. I relocated the ignition module on mine and haven't looked back.
Apart from being made in the USSR or later Russia, when I bought mine a mate who worked for Toyota, reckoned that they were no good because they had a monocoque chassis, constant 4WD (AWD) and coil suspension, which sounds sort of familiar when compared to what many are driving now.
I still have mine (It probably has $0 resale value). It always goes, even when I don't drive it for years and Parts are ridiculously cheap when compared to Japanese vehicles, even if the quality isn't that great.
It's not a great tow vehicle, the torque and power's not really suited to that.
It's noisy at speed so you need a loud stereo.
It does have a free revving engine (Fiat), AWD and is SWB but quite wide. Driving it on winding dirt roads at the highest allowed speed is just plain FUN. ;D

He was so impressed with the Niva, a VC Commodore or XE Falcon would absolutely knock his socks off (and do all those tracks).

I saw one once go up a hill at Blackwood (vic) like a mountain goat... very impressive going past the patrol an cruiser that couldnt do it.. The owner said the carby always fell apart! Prob why so many caught fire!! :cheers: Phil

It wouldnt have been his later years.....................I can remember being about 7 or 8 at Uncles 2 second wedding that went on for days and they old boys were doing time trials around a paddock drunk as skunks in an old holden paddock basher with no doors............
There probably was some cash in it somewhere though.........

first LPG gas fit that i did was to a lada niva owner came in and asked I could fit LPG to one what a job nowhere to fit stuff but said OK he wanted 60ltr tank finished up with about 40ltr being a first fit had to take it to an inspection station to be passed pulled in and this inspector started to laugh his first comment was. what possessed you to take this job on? told him seemed like a good job (had to do three to get a gas fitters licence) desperate!! but it went alright could have done with higher compression ratio.next two that i did were Fords got my licence.Two weeks latter bugger me another Lada owner
rocks in asks for a quote appears the inspector recommended me, probably thought I was the only stooge that was silly enough to do the job.To be fair never had a problem with either of them once fitted
