Title: How do you rate our politicians
Post by: corndog on March 28, 2018, 10:27:55 AM
Just wondering how people really feel about our politicians. Are they overworked, underpaid, benefits to small or large, get away with to much, should they be more accountable, should they get what they do when chucked out of politics?    You get the picture.

Tough call.
The perks are to lure the kind of people out of business that you want running the country. But unfortunately they all are entitled to it.
I wouldn’t want there job, it seems they can never make anyone happy.

I think 95% of them go in with the best intentions.

But because they have to tow the party line, to get anything for your electorate you have to agree to things you are not 100% behind. In time this would become the norm.

The problem is that you become a product of your environment. Things that at first don't seem right then become normal and then become expected. This leads to a seance of entitlement and total detachment from real life. Bronwyn Bishop is the perfect example of this. She believed that the helicopter thing was fine. In her mind we were all crazy and had no idea.

I don't think they get paid to much. They are away from home a lot. Plus to get decent people you need to pay well (maybe we should up the pay rate).

Maybe make a maximum time you can be a politician. This would stop complacency.

We do not need a political debate.  They are all f wits with their snout in the trough.  As regards pay..."they are away from home a lot".   and get $250-$300 non taxable payment per night  for when they are not at home.  Some of the sleazy mongrels even stay in their own houses they own and still get the cash bonus.  There are so many perks that it is just sickening.   What qualifications do you need ...NONE.  Some of the morons couldnt even work out what their citizen ship standard was..DOH!!!

Some might be interested in the comments. If your not then you do not need to participate or read anything within it. It is your choice but because you don't like the subject matter should it not be mentioned.

I think that’s a fair summary.
Although without parties and having a parliament full of independents nothing would get done. They would never reach any sort of consensus.
I think independents often wield too much power if they hold the balance of power. I’ll vote for that so long as my electorate gets....

The definition of a politician says it all:

1. a person who is active in party politics.
2. a seeker or holder of public office, who is more concerned about winning favor or retaining power than about maintaining principles.
3. a person who holds a political office.
4. a person skilled in political government or administration; statesman or stateswoman.
5. an expert in politics or political government.
6. a person who seeks to gain power or advancement within an organization in ways that are generally disapproved.

Most of if not all of our current politicians fall if not all fall into catergories two and six unfortunately.

I'm not sticking up for the pollies but would any of us put our hands up to do the job, it's a pretty thankless task, you are adored by some, hated by most and your personal life is subject to all sorts of scrutiny.

Shouldn't discuss politics or religion.

If I was money orientated I definitely would have had a go.  However a sense of self worth and not being a very good liar would see me fail the a-hole test!!

Poorly.

I would like to see politicians who actually even while being party members, did not continually tow the party line unless the majority in their electorate also supported that policy.
So perhaps using their electoral funds to canvas the opinions of their constituents and vote accordingly.

Similarly, politicians who CAN see past the next election and rather than what will keep them in office, do what is best for Australia as a whole. Noting that propping up candidates in marginal  electorates, is most often, not necessarily what is best for Australia as a whole.

Politicians who do not make promises into the distant future, fully knowing that they will never ever be likely to be held to account for those promises.

Tony Abbott ruined politics in Australia by putting personal interest which were bad for our economy, ahead of the interest of Australia

I think that those who try to oversimplify the complexities of the job probably don't have a great understanding of what is involved and wouldn't last for long in the job. I think if we paid them peanuts then we would really get to see what incompetence really looks like as opposed to what many think it looks like, I certainly don't think they are all good but I'd rather we pay a comparable wage to what a capable individual is worth and end up with a few over-entitled pollies, than I would pay peanuts and end up with a whole swag of incompetent people running the country.

Like all parts of the community, some are good, some are bad and some switch between the two.

More importantly, I wonder how much of a material impact any pollie actually has on our life? Do they really have anywhere near as much impact on our future as our families, employers, teachers, doctors, nurses, church leaders, other public servants (at all levels from the postie to the head of the reserve bank), business leaders or a myriad of other people both here and abroad?

I think that, if you look at the gas and electricity situation, we'd all have to agree that we have not been adequately served by the political classes.

Rate against what?
Against what the world have to offer or what the different parties offer?
Also, rate them only base on their integrity and honesty, not their political view because that can be personal. So rate them on merit.

Against the world
For me, if I rate them against my country of birth and it’s current political leaders then I rate then extremely high. I believe most people is still waiting for the promises of years gone by to be fulfilled.

If I rate then against European leaders then they are on pair. Promises are broken when it suites them, but most of the time the Country comes first.

Against America then below pair only because Trump is at least trying to keep his promises, ignoring if you agree with them or not.

Against Putin, they all fail since he gave the majority of his people some pride back. (I dislike the guy, but must acknowledges that he took Russia from being a laughing stock of the late 1990 to a world power again)

I do not know enough about China internal politics, so cannot rate against the public face of China.

Internally
Malcolm against Shorten
Devil you know vs the devil you do not know.
Shorten knifed both his previous leaders and have ambition.
He thinks before he speaks, not like when Malcolm propose that the States collect 2% of income tax and they can increase or decrease it. (Brilliant idea, but no consultation so it failed)
Malcolm is experiencing what every step-parent experience. No matter what you do, in bad times you will be reminded directly or indirectly that you are the step-parent. Tony will be in the back and his present is felt. The real parent was kick out and cannot return but they are always present.

Their are great people in both parties, but they are the shadows and both leaders light is to bright.

Bottom line is that Australian politics are interesting and not life threatening.
During election time thousands of people die in the a Third World, not here.
This is truely the lucking country except if your name is Steve Smith or David Warner!
