Fishing rod transport
« on: May 27, 2020, 02:21:03 PM »
Probably should be in the fishing section, but not a lot of activity there.

What is the current legal rule to transport fishing rods on your bullbar
Before you could legal carry them outside as long as they are on the left aside and not infront of the bullbar

Still the case?

Never had a problem so I must be OK. I've chatted to quite a few police while having this setup. I do turn the holders back behind the roo bar when they're not in use. All legal apparently.

Can I fit fishing rod holders to my vehicle?
From Qld Transport:
https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Vehicle-standards-and-modifications/Vehicle-modifications/Frequently-asked-questions-vehicle-standards-and-modifications.aspx#fishing

A vehicle can be fitted with a fishing rod holder provided it complies with the following requirements:

Must only be attached to the left side of the vehicle
Must be designed to carry no more than four fishing rods
Rods, hooks and sinkers must be properly secured
Vehicle lighting must not be obstructed by rods or the holder
The rod holder must be either removed or retracted behind the profile of the bull bar when not in use

For further information about vehicle protrusions, please refer to the Minor Modifications publication (PDF, 1.3 MB).

Mine are left of centre but not by a lot. They do protrude a fair bit (pic 1) and there's no reason to have them protruding when not in use.

All neat and flush when rotated.

Due to where my UHF aerial bracket is located on the left hand wing of my bar, I need to fit my fishing rod holder to the middle section of my bar.

I’ve been doing this for 10 years plus years on my current 4WD and I’ve passed hundreds of police cars as well as stopped for multiple breath tests on the beach and to date I’ve never had a problem.

While the holder can only have 4 tubes to be legal, I quiet often carry 7 rods which isn’t hard with 3 or 4 guys on the car. I also put masking tape to stick the sinker to the rod as I’ve seen a windscreen broken from a lose sinker.

When they aren’t in use, I do take my rod holder off

Beachman, for holding sinkers, I use old Velcro straps off sandals etc to affix sinkers to rods. Quick and easy and if you get them long enough, you can run a full wrap around the sinker to stop any impact on the rod glass.

In regard to velcro for straps & so on:

$10 for 10m is much easier than trying to salvage 2nd hand bits, & you can have your straps as long as you want ;D 8)
