Title: The Daily Scam Thread
Post by: D4D on September 30, 2011, 09:45:43 AM
Given the numerous posts re online scams, I thought I'd start a thread to consolidate them.

Please post your scams here rather than start a new thread.

I think the fact that "Julia" sent it Prado BB we should KNOW it's another scam.....hehehe

But seriously most of the time the grammar in these scams is pretty bad and it can give them away immediately...

It's definately buyer beware these days..  >:(

Wife almost got scammed by the puppy sellers.

She saw a puppy online somewhere going for a good price, deceased estate etc., and organised to have it freighted COD.
On the day of delivery she received emails and phone calls (from an Indian) to deposit the $$ into a Western Union account in Cameroon....

Not a chance she fell for that once Western Union was mentioned.

Had a very sad daughter though  :'(

Another scam that targets sellers of livestock - puppies and kittens mainly - The buyer gets in touch via email (puppies to be freighted) and pays by Paypal but inadvertantly pays way too much - then requests that excess or whole amount refunded via Western Union so transaction can take place. Seller is send confirmation of tyhis transaction via email from Paypal and refunds $ by Western Union.

Seller then checks Paypal account to find no money - email was bogus and funds sent thru Western Union withdrawn.

Cost the last person $1200.

Ouch!

My wife got a letter from spain, addressed to her initials stating that after an aborting effort she is the only person they could find who was related to a female person wth my family name.(Mind you if you do a simple search on facebook there are a sh#t load of us ). Apparently this lady had something like 3million,7hundred and something eauros and we are entitled to it,this so called barrister who went through the efforts of making this letter look real, even with a letter head was saying that we will work together and both share the money left behind by this woman. Straight onto crime stoppers then onto scamlink and yes they said it was a scam, they say they want to help you and that we're in this together and then they ask for your details and empty you out. I hope they catch these bastards,If it's too good to be true listen to your gut insticts.

An email sent from Aust Post via US parcel service with an attached zip file, showing the invoice and that my package had arrived t the post office....Aust Post don't email with attached zip files....they don't email at all when a parcel arrives...they put a note in the letter box.

The zip file contained a virus...my computer OS picked it up...

Title: Cheap Jayco Van ..... I smell scam
Post by: wazboz on November 05, 2011, 10:02:22 PM
Hi All,

Just joined myswag and have just bought an old Jayco Scenic. First step up for us from a tent/swag and looking forward to getting out and about in it. Have been trawling the treads for tech hints and tip - thanks all, a lot of great stuff here!!

Anyway, tonight I was searching Tradingpost, Ebay, etc, for a camper for a mate and this one turns up on Ebay search on the price range I was looking at:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2005-Jayco-Heritage-30th-Anniversary-Pop-Top-Caravan-/320787797069?pt=AU_Caravans_RVs&hash=item4ab071544d#ht_1154wt_1848

I smell a scam as it is:
- Buy it now price way too cheap
- all the text appears to be an image rather than text (avoiding some sort of automatic Ebay filter?)
- he seems a bit excited about no one bidding before he can have a chat to you on his hotmail

The ad will probably get pulled before this thread is up for more than a day, so I have printed a PDF of how the ad is presented now. Happy for mods to delete the thread is the link to ebay becomes a dead link. Otherwise, I have hosted the PDF of the ad here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?8n8e3knfhyw8tse

What do you all think? Not sure how he gets to have good feedback if he is a scammer, but maybe it is all legit.

I am not interested in the van myself, just thought it would be good for conversation. Anyone want to email him to see what his story is ... I cbf.

Warren.

According my work email, I have a number of outstanding parking and speeding fines from New York City, and I must pay them now before I'm penalized with legal proceedings against me.

I get just as many of those emails as I do for Viagra advertisements.

I've never been to the US.

It's not the offer of viagra that worries me or the ones offering a drug to give me a bigger willy (how do they know), Its the constant offer of Russian brides. I'm already married and am generally in enough trouble with her, Why would I want another wife!

Got phone call on Friday from an Indian call centre telling me that my computer had been infected and that if I gave them remote access to my computer they could fix it.

I told them I didn't have a computer and they hung up. Go figure.

If it sounds to good to be true it is. The scammers typically use stolen eBay accounts hence the feedback.

WOOHOO

15 minutes after listing the car on the tradingpost and gumtree and I have it sold sight unseen and for $600 more than I asked for. The deal was done within 1 hour of listing.

The money has been sent to my paypal account and he has included an extra $2000 for his agent. Its a pity the post office is closed as I will have to wait until Monday before I can transfer the agents money but in the mean time someone else wants to buy it sight unseen.

I have told him that the other Nigerian wants to pay $600 above asking price, cant wait for his offer... if there is a lot of these guys I might end up selling it for more than I paid new...

Well they don't muck about.  here is most of the transcipts for the first scammer.

I let predictive text do its own thing, just so they get to understand what its like reading there crap.

The money will only reflect in your account until you reply back to the confirmation email you received from PayPal by sending the mtcn number of the $2,000 that is to be send to my pick up agent so that they can come for the pick up..if you have gone through the email you received from PayPal very well regarding the payment i made...you must have been notify about all this,And paypal will not allow me do cancel or refund my money back to me until this transaction is completed because it has been deducted from my account and they are doing this to protect both the seller and the buyer...
To make this issue very clear to you, just reply to the confirmation email paypal sent to you and ask them anything you want to ask cos it is easier and faster because i will like it to be pickedup on Tuseday morning...You will surely get the reply from paypal as soon as you have replied to the mail they sent to you..
Advice positively..

I just want to inform you that i have just completed the payment and i hope you must have been notified in your email about the payment i made through PayPal, you can check your e-mail for confirmation of payment, I have just make the payment of $54,800.,i have decided to add the amount of $2,200 which i paid through paypal, you can now send $2,000 to my pick up agent via western union so he can be able to come for the pick up and also PayPal said they won't release the funds until they get the western union information from you due to the fact that i emailed them about the excess payment i made.I will need you to send the $2,000 to my pick up agent Headquarters where they normally confirm any commission payment to via western union money transfer(this can be done from the post office, as they usually have a western union agent there) , i added extra $200 to cover the western union charges which shouldn't be more that $60-75 but just to be sure i added $200, Here is my pick up agent Headquarter info needed to get the money sent through western union money transfer

Oh,i got this from my agent now which I need to inform you about this, just received an email from my pick agent...am most sure i did not include that in my previous email,he said he won't come for the pick up unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time and my pick up agent Head Quarters is in the United Kingdom and all commission payment made for pick up from anywhere in the world is sent to their Head Quarters in the Uk and the only form of payment they accept is western union money transfer.
I have tried to pay online but i will need a credit card which i didn't bring aboard the ship, and there is no post office(there is usually a western union section in most post offices) or any western union agent on sea! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i will include the $2,000 they charged to pick it up and take it my home(1st class treatment),to the payment i will send through PayPal, after i have made the payment.
I will need you to help me send the $2,000 to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, the western union money transfer can be made at a post office near to you, there is always a western union agent in most post offices or online at www.westernunion.com (http://www.westernunion.com) .I will be making the payment shortly and will email you as soon as it has been done.

Hi Swaggers
I do not wish to seem naive about this issue, but is there any difference between "Scam" and the emails that go into the "Spam" which ask me if I want to be 3" bigger and all those ladies telling me they have just split from their boyfriends.
The wife keeps asking me why they are emailing me, and all I can say is the truth, "I don't know why".

Hi Tjupurula,
There is a difference between a scam & spam.
Scammers, are out to fleece you of your hard earned and are giving the impression they are someone they are not and Spammers are out to entice your into giving your hard earned over willingly, for a produce that is dodgy.
They are both Scum.

Just the other day I got one of those Microsoft calls. This was the 2nd for the day.
He asked me what I could see on my computer,
I told him I was looking at porn, He ignored that and asked what was in the corner of my screen, I told him a lovely pair of Tits,
I asked him if he would like me to send him the link. It went quiet for a bit.
He then told my to close that, I told him if I could do a remote access, he could see it too, but I hoped he had virus protection cause the site has viruses that make your penis shrivel up.
He hung up.
No sense of humor some people.

I've given up asking them how and why they have rung me, now I have a bit of fun with them.
They(the mobs behind these calls) must make a bit for them to keep calling.
The only thing we can do is tell everyone about them, I you hear of someone getting a computer that isn't tech savy, tell them not to listen to these people., just hang up.

Tjupurula, I have a mate that that is really paranoid about this kind of stuff and very rarely turns his computer on anymore, he freaks out every time he gets one of these spam emails  "how did they get my email address, why do they want to know that, I didn't ask them to email me"

I forward all my email through Gmails servers, than have my email client fetch it from there. once a fortnight clean out the spam and trash from Gmail. It is pretty good at picking up the scams & spam.
A little program I use is POP Peeper (http://www.poppeeper.com/)
You can see what emails are at your server without having to download the emaisl, you can delete them using Pop Peeper.
It notifies you of email that has arrived.
Hope this helps guys.

Hi all
I have a small online sales business. We sell electrical test tags - narrow market, Australia, New Zealand customers.
I regularly get inquiries from Indonesia, Malaysia, and South America.
At first I was rather excited...... But then started looking into the business buyers - no web sites for them. Most business have web sites now days.... Started looking a bit sus.
Now we state up front to the buyers that all purchases must be paid via PayPal. If the overpay me, it is their loss and my gain. We will not send any product without payment.
We also post everything by registered mail, so we can track arrival.

I think we have covered all bases - but I am a bit open to extra safeguards we can take....
We have so far sent product to a few countries without a problem.

Thankyou Hairs for that explanation.  I have now learned how to quickly select all those emails and delete them.  I will show my wife your post when she gets home, and that should settle her concerns.  I do have the basic Yahoo email address, but I also have my business email address, which is via my website which is dmbboilermaking.com.au.  I don't get any silly emails there as it is checked by the ISP (hopefully correct) that host my website for me.

I got scammed big time................ :'( :'( :'(

Promises of love, happiness. joy and a wonderful life..............
So I married her :-[ :-[ :-[

Jeez, I got scammed..................

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Just kidding...........

Love the misses and kids, wouldn't swap them even for a new glamper!!! ;D

But I did have an episode where the roles were reversed.

I emailed an ebayer about a bike I wanted, with a speel about not being able to get to look at it, but interested.
Could I send father in law to have a look for me. (He lives nearby)
Can pay etc etc.........
I basically got told to poq.....which I guess is fair enough. The bloke is probably sick of scammers.

I then tried it again on a bloke in Mudgee. Gave my speel on not being able to look or pick up till later as I have work committments in Sydney etc etc.
He couldn't help me enough.
Great bloke, helpful, bike was in mint condition and really great price.
He even delivered it to my inlaws for me.

Sometimes some crazy excuse is just what it is. No lies or deception, just circumstance.
Unfortunately these scammers ruin it for everyone.
I know I find it very hard to trust people these days and its very sad. >:(

There are still heaps of good folk out there, but lets give these scammers hell while we can. :police: :police: :police:

Cheers

If you aren't sure about an email address, just Google it as in most cases if it is fake then something will show up. For example, Google results for the email address in Cancan's post above show the following :
http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&sugexp=llsin&gs_nf=1&cp=21&gs_id=7&xhr=t&q=steanseld34%40gmail.com&pf=p&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&oq=steanseld34%40gmail.com&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=e325bd1c2d99c923&biw=1600&bih=728 (http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&sugexp=llsin&gs_nf=1&cp=21&gs_id=7&xhr=t&q=steanseld34%40gmail.com&pf=p&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&oq=steanseld34%40gmail.com&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=e325bd1c2d99c923&biw=1600&bih=728)

He hung up.
No sense of humor some people.I've given up asking them how and why they have rung me, now I have a bit of fun with them.

LMAO,, i used that yesterday, got one of those calls........it gave me more pleasure spinning that yarn than hanging up on them,,, good one mate.

Further arrangements will be made with you in regards to the pick up once the payment has been completed.

Agents are welcome, but item(s) not released till FULL amount is deposited in MY bank account, or cash is sitting in my hand. Simple rules :)

Regards
Tjupurula

Yes i have been getting alot of spam lately. Just started recently.

That is the funniest,
Having an Indian woman calling on behalf of Microsoft calling me a 'Mudder****er'
ROTFLMAO (http://www.hairfysh.com/images/Icons/Smileys/roflmao.gif)
All I said to her was, "Hey honey, I'm a wake up to you Elephant washers and so are a lot of Aussies"
She answered with, "You are a Mudder ****er"
And hung up on me

Took him 5 mins to explain the web was the Internet and not cobwebs inside my computer :)

When we got our new phone connected we got 4 to 5 calls per day from a mob "in Melbourne", sometimes caller ID would show a 03 number, sometimes international.

They kept saying they were calling about my Telstra phone line, I immediately asked them if they were calling from Telstra. One lady tried to duck the question, most at that point just gave up. They did get in that they were not trying to sell me anything, then one guy also got in that Telstra were charging me daily blah blah blah.

In the end I had to yell at one of them that if they truely were based in Melbourne, as I had asked them each call to remove me from their list that I would be reporting them for harrasement. Calls stopped after that.

Following on from Morto's thread,
SGM Carolyn Gorrey is still listing the Jayco,
here's a message i received,

Hi again,

Thank you for your email. The total price included the delivery will be $14.000. I've told you, at this moment I am in Darwin NT in a military base, getting ready for TAS (I hope for the last time). I am doing a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or give calls whenever I want. The delivery will take 2 to 3 days depending on your location. Because it is a large transaction, we will complete the deal only using an authorized third part like Amazon Checkout Service coz I already prearranged the whole process with them, using their Amazon Checkout Service (bank-to-bank wire transfer).

The money will be sent to Amazon Checkout Service, before you will receive the camper trailer. So, you will deposit the payment directly into the Amazon Checkout Service bank account, either online or at most banks and they will hold and secure your money during the entire transaction. I repeat, they will hold and insure your money until receipt of the camper trailer in good condition and will release the funds to us only after you decide to keep the camper trailer and register it, into your name. If by any reason (the camper trailer has any hidden damages or is not like I describe it) you can reject the deal,in this case Amazon Checkout Service will refund you totally.

Let me know your details (full name, full address and home phone number) so I can open a transaction case with Amazon Checkout Service and declare you as buyer, they will contact you with more details, and explain better the whole process.
You must know that Amazon Checkout Service will contact you without any obligation to buy or to pay some fees.

I am looking forward to hear from you.
Regards,

SGM Carolyn Gorey
Royal Australian Air Force

PS: If need please find the swan details below.

VIN  6AM000000A1M13123
Rego 513QRN
Rego Expiry on 08/03/2014
No finance over the camper trailer

Also please find attached the copy of PPSR Certificate.

The camper will be delivered with our RAAF trailer that have transport insurance.

Not a scam however just as bad, probably worse. I am on night shift this week as well as SWMBO. Anyway a witness has come forward about a sus vehicle in my neck of the woods. They report that this vehicle was loitering around the Comm bank ATM. Local van goes out as well as the Sarge and they discover a strip of plastic with computer type cabling, camera etc above the ATM. Rip it out and sure enough it's a skimmer. SO BEWARE AND CHECK ALL ATMS BEFORE WITHDRAWING .

Just got this one

First my apology, for intruding into your email address; Being for the fact that we do not know or have meet each other before. I plead with you to patiently read through my proposal before making a decision, whether or not to partake in this business opportunity or not.
I am a staff of the Department of Public Works of the Government of South Africa. I got your contact E-mail address from a directory provided to our department by your country consulate here in my country; and I am writing you in my quest to find a neutral person from your country, on whom I can repose confidence for a transaction of this nature.
After over my Fifteen years (15yrs) working with the South African Government and receiving salaries that do not quite meet up with my bills; I finally now have the privilege and opportunity, just as many of my former colleagues had; to receive money I negotiated off a contract sum, awarded to a foreign contractor from your country, who has been paid currently of is original contract amount. As a result of the contract payment made; the amount that I negotiated off the original contract sum from the Foreign Contractor, is pending for payment with the South African offshore payment centre and fund manager's in the United Kingdom, with no beneficiary name to the funds; and virtue of my position as a staff of the government, I cannot claim these funds legally in my name or in the names of companies here in South Africa; but only with the beneficiary name of a non-residence of South Africa or a foreign company from your Country, then can I acquire the funds. Hence, that is why I have contacted you for assistance.
I need your assistance as a residence from the same Country of the original contractor to Claim the amount of US$25.5M (Twenty Five Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) I negotiated off the original Contract sum; pending for payment at the South Africa Offshore Payment fund managers in the United Kingdom.
My choice of you for this transaction is basically hanged on urgency and limitation on my part as a staff of the South African Government and I hope you will not let me down? If you can genuinely assist me claim and receive the funds in question as beneficiary to it? Kindly reply to this email address: replymanselm@gmail.com stating your interest to assist me and I shall send you details on how we may proceed to claim and receive the funds and what you shall benefit for your assistance. Note: I have sent this proposal to other individuals from your country; but they did not believe me; due to lots of false business proposal on the internet today. So I kindly ask that you have a positive mindset about this business opportunity and I promise that you will not regret your involvement; as in every fake out there, there is an original of it.
I await your response.
Best Regards
Mansel Mbeki

Just had a call from a Telstra Technician telling me my computer has a virus that will close down my internet connection!  OMG.....  Well I had him of the phone for about 15 minutes while I took him and then his supervisor on a merry road of untruths.  Finally he got a bit upset with me but he was able to describe my mother’s anatomy and what she has been up to, I had no idea she was like that and what I should do to her and then he told me that I had a face like a donkey.  I thought he ort he ort he ort not call me that. I just lost it then and could not stop laughing at him as he continued his rage at me. He then hung up. I have not had that much fun for a while.  So when you get these calls, don’t hang up have some fun.   ;D  Kevin

l was saddened today when a bloke rang me with the news that he wasn't trying to sell me anything . Clearly he been into my bank account only to discover theres nothing there . Funeral insurance is his go . l Demanded that he tell me of my test results , clearly they weren't good as why would l need a funeral just yet . l know nobody gets out of this gig alive  but its a bit too early to arrange the wank as l have just layed in another 10 slabs  ( on  special )
l had this grekin on the line pleading to be told was l going to die or not  . He hung up on me so from that l can only deduce l will live forever      ,,,,,,,,, & have to pay tax  . Such is Life

Might ring the radio station then!
Had the same thing in bunnings car park in Wodonga last week. They were trying to sell "home theatre system" to anyone that would listen.

A few of the boys at work said they had heard they were about too. They better not have been shopping at Bunnings though!

M favourite scam was from years (13) ago where they managed to nicely scam the scammer.
After they figured out a scammer was wanting to "buy" his computer he decided to agree to the sale, except instead of sending the actual computer they sent a folder with some old computer keys stuck to it, the forum he was on that got involved all chipped in a few $$$ for the shipping but then they put the full value of the real computer on the box, the scammer then had to pay about $600AUD in import duties to get it. And through the wonder of the internet, there were people on the other side of the world who were also on the forum who managed to be there when he picked it up and opened it.

Here is the original forum topic in all it's 80 pages of glory, was a worthwhile read from memory

A work colleague recently listed a car on gumtree and must have displayed the number plates in the photos. He had a visit from the police the other day inquiring if his car had been involved in fuel stealing drive offs  and numerous traffic offences in Brisbane (1000 km away).
It seems people are now printing labels from details found on the net that have matching cars and sticking them onto the number plates of said cars so make sure you block out any rego details when posting photos of vehicles.

Well its been good while it lasted but the ATO has finally caught up with me for serious tax avoidance and tax evasion ..........or so it seems.
I found a message on my answerphone from a James Anderson of the ATO  today offering me the opportunity to call them back before they escalated it to the Commonwealth Court or issued a warrant for my arrest but whatever I do I must not disregard this warning.
He even left a number  - 02 88800263.

How does this one work ... are they trying to get personal details or remote access to my PC or what ???

Cheers

I must be a bad person as I've had at least four calls from them, apparently the trick they use is to get you to buy ITunes cards and send to them as payment for your misdemeanors, heard on the news a while ago that a shop assistant had an elderly customer who wanted several hundred dollars worth of cards, when she questioned the customer as to why she needed so many was told the story. Luckily she told the customer that the Tax office don't accept ITune cards and pointed her in the direction of Consumer Affairs.

The ATO scam is probably as prolific as the traffic accident scam.

A bit of info here: https://www.ato.gov.au/general/online-services/identity-security/verify-or-report-a-scam/ (https://www.ato.gov.au/general/online-services/identity-security/verify-or-report-a-scam/)
https://www.ato.gov.au/media-centre/media-releases/don-t-get-played-by-itunes-scammers/ (https://www.ato.gov.au/media-centre/media-releases/don-t-get-played-by-itunes-scammers/)

Quote
The ATO will never:

    threaten you with immediate arrest
ask you to pay money to receive a refund or payment from us
ask you to pay a debt via iTunes vouchers, or pre-paid credit card or store gift cards
ask you to provide personal information, such as your tax file number (TFN) or credit card number, via email or SMS
ask you to pay money into a personal bank account
direct you to download files from the internet, or open attachments in unsolicited emails.

They won't even tell you that they are taking it to court, over the phone like that.

A few years ago my wife got an Email, that was so well presented that you would swear that it came from the ATO. It looked so genuine, the give away was in the address line for the web page was something like cz.co and some other crap. Instead of ato.gov.au, go to the second page and it wanted all your details address, dob, passport no, banking details etc etc. So I forwarded it onto the ATO. Let them sort it out, but for an older or gullible person it would seem very genuine. It was for a supposed refund. Plus any correspondence from the ATO to us goes via our accountant.

So I got the Insurance car accident phone call today. After confirming I was in a no fault accident and that I had 8 passengers in a Suzuki Mighty Boy and they all died along with the at fault driver I got escalated to a supervisor. I had to go through the spiel again. What pissed me off after they hung up on me was that I said yes around half a dozen times and the thing that came to me immediately was tha scam about getting the person to say yes and record it for other phone banking scams however they didn't ask for my name so it might be all good.

A new one to me is a call coming from a sub-continent based female with the name of Anne Williams (yeah right) where they say they are calling from Telstra and that they need to turn your internet off for 6 months. Wife tells me the same woman calls almost every day so when i got the call i told them to F off in no uncertain terms and also that we have never had a Telstra account.

Telstra phoned me to today as overseas hackers were accessing my internet connection.

"Very very bad and you must do everything I say" she said. "I'm from the Telstra technical department and you have to trust me"

Ok who are you ringing I asked.... scary thing was she had my name and address correct.

Next question stumped her and she hung up "what type of plan do I have?"

Bugger I wanted to play some more   :D

Is this a scam then?
Starting yesterday I have had 15-20 calls on my mobile, most from different numbers, asking to speak to a "Wendy". Apparently "Wendy" partook in an online survey & ticked a box that she wanted info from several companies involved in the survey. It seems that she made an error in typing her mobile number & came up with mine!
Each person who has phoned me (Aussies) has apologized & has told me that they have placed me on their "Do not call" registers.
It could happen I suppose!

I know of someone who got scammed using a recorded voice of theirs to purchase mobile phones and credit.

It does happen and apparently it's quite easy to do.........

I fell victim to identity theft a few years ago, but it amounted to not a lot. Just some crim trying to use my id to get a passport.
Police sorted it out quick smart for me.

These days when I get a call from someone I don't recognise I just ignore it or answer saying " Jobs done, but what do you want me do with the body?"
After a few try's to get me to listen to them, I get agitated and say "Seriously I don't have time, I have to do something with this body"
They then usually hang up.

It amuses me for a while and pees them right off.
Since I've been doing it the volume of calls seem to have dropped off. Just hope ASIO don't get wind of it >:D >:D >:D
I could have some explaining to do.......... :-[

Just don't say "yes" to anything over the phone and if they have to scam it or sell it, you don't want it.

Cheers, Brian

With the number of scams out there SWMBO and I simply don't answer any calls from numbers not in our contacts on our mobile phones or on our caller id on the home phone.
If it's a legit call I reckon they will leave a message.

My elderly mother has been on the "do not call" register for years (not that it stops the overseas callers, charities and political parties).

She had a call tonight from a guy wanting to "check her registration" for the do not call list.

She might be 93 but she is still pretty alert and after a few questions she just hung up.

He rang back.

He wouldn't say where he was from, give a number I could call to check or accept her offer to write a letter.

So she hung up on him again.

Dunno what this might be about. Perhaps to remove her from the register?

Anybody heard of this one?

Cheers

Speaking of this, I was watching TV tonight when I get a message on the screen... "Samsung J1 (2016) wants to connect to your TV"
Not really a big deal I thought at first, just the neighbour having a play with his phone and found my TV pop up on his TV-phone mirror app. But then I remembered the show I watched last night about this bloke who examines all the exploits possible through wifi connected things. He connected to a wifi connected kettle (yeah, why would you need that), and fair enough, all he could do to it was turn it on. But, the other very handy thing he could find out, via the connection, was the un-encrypted passkey to the wifi network it was connected to. That opens up a lot of possibilities for a smart crook.

As for my TV (Samsung 6000 series), you can't switch off the direct wifi connection facility, you can only deny connection for each device that tries to connect. TV has no camera or mike, which was what the big concern was when it was found out you could hack into Samsung TVs, but I wonder how secure your network details and login and password (required for ABC? catchup TV) are?

I was invited to sit in on a webinar for a great new healthy product yesterday. I didn't watch the spiel on this product but did some  research on a product linked to the name of the webinar folks "ASEA water". SCAM!!!!!!. Here is a link to a reputable group exposing it. There are plenty of discussions on the web about it.

https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/asea-another-expensive-way-to-buy-water/

The ASEA water is salt water that has been "altered" &  cures coughs, colds & sore holes, makes athletes into super beings, blah blah blah.

This product has been around for a while but it looks like a fresh assault is being made in Aus to fleece the unwary.

Not heard of this one but geez it bugged me how many people would call my father despite him being on the Do Not Call registry. Like your mother he was pretty alert for his age right up til the end, so he'd get sick of them and bail them up on the phone asking them where they were from, usually getting promptly hung up on because of cause they were in violation for calling him and he could report them, LOL.

He would have regular cold callers knock at the front door trying to sell him all sorts of things too. Some of it legit, some of it not so much.

Its actually scary how inept a lot of "smart" IoT devices are at encrypting and protecting your information. With a lot of these connected devices, security is pretty woeful. I really love the concept of having things connected (though like you mentioned... a smart kettle, really?) but until security is better, I'm out.

Anyone looking for a cheap outboard or BBQ.  Steer clear of these to scam sites.

https://www.topmarineoutboards.com.au

https://www.barbecuecity.com.au

A mate sent me a link to a very cheap 4 stroke outboard.  The old saying "if it looks to good to be true, then it probably is." had me wary.

The site looked suspect and 2 minutes of googling confirmed that, along with an almost identical BBQ site. A few people on FB have admitted to losing a few grand to this site.

The BBQ City one DOES have an ACN associated with the domain, but its for a company located in SA, not NSW. At least the business names appear to match...

Top Outboard Motors... is also concerning. There is an ABN associated with their domain, but that ABN seems to be for a DIFFERENT Marine company (entirely different name!) located in the NT... Hm.

Wonder if the owners of the ACN's/ABN's know their details are getting used for other websites... Pays to check the details behind any suspect website I guess!

Well, came upon another one today that I had not heard of before.
My sister-in-law - aged 85- lives alone and does not have internet access or a computer/tablet/mobile. Details are time approximate as at it all happened over the 2 weeks before advised to me and last contact and theft to her was 4 days ago. She had several phone calls over several days selling solar. She got increasingly frustrated and said so on last call. With-in 24hrs, she had a call from "Telstra Help Desk" saying they believed she had been having scam calls and they can help. Seemed they had some personal details to help convince authenticity of Telstra. Not sure how it went but caller advised they can send a device to put on the phone line to stop spam calls. Also asked to CONFIRM HER 16 DIGIT VISA CARD NUMBERS WERE XXXXX, which she had to go and get to confirm. Caller did not ask for, or confirmed, expiry date or CVV. Caller said they would be sending the device out. Caller said if any problems, call 02 8103 2090 and his name was Peter Bardon and made reference to the company "Sword Smart". Upon hearing all this tonight, we made immediate contact to VISA (too late for bank) and found a on-line debit of $171 on Monday 18th had been made (4 days ago). She has never made any on-line transaction - ever. VISA cancelled her card immediately. Bank will be visited in the morning. Other phone numbers from her handset history seem to be 0043878712 and 02358924323 and 004701683.
She will not be answering any calls that are not identified with caller NAMES from her handset caller list from now on nor confirming or denying personal details to any cold caller if she does answer.!!! (I hope).

I reckon that the biggest scam getting around is the NBN (Nationally Broken Network, No Bloody Network, etc.) I pay for a 50Mbps connection and get a MAX of 12.5 when it's working at all. >:( Phone calls, e-mails and registered letters all result in finger pointing and nothing else.

And I reckon that if I had taken up all the offers for penis enhancement and weight loss pills I'd have a penis 1 kilometre long and I'd weigh about 1.2 grams...  ;D
Title: Re: The Daily Scam Thread
Post by: Bookleaf on December 22, 2017, 11:09:41 AM
Yes
Seems the method of operation is to spam call phone numbers until they get one that continually answers and the user gets rely angry. Then come in with the white night "Telstra Help Line" advising they believe the user has been having hassle calls and they can fix that by supplying a magic device.  They then charge for the device and (no doubt) never deliver it.  If ever caught and challenged they no doubt have as a defence that the user read out their CC number and hence gave authority to charge against it.  Of course, there was never any mention of charging or of the cost at any time by the white night.
And may use it again since the scam went over undetected/challenged/cancelled the first time.

The scary thing is that the white night knows the users' CC number in the first place.

With all the hacking going on globally with all these big corp's - that never admit a problem for 12 months after it happened, all our card numbers are probably in the wrong hands already.

I usually hang up when there is silence but the last few days have stayed on to find out who is hassling me. I have had four calls this week.

Does anybody still fall for this stuff? I guess they do otherwise the call centres would give up.

Hi,
Once they have a victim engaged, they are passed up the line to an 'expert' who leads them through the 'fix'.
This involves installing remote access software which enables covert surveillance for saleable data such as PINS or passwords etc.
A friend allowed him self to be 'led' through the process as far as he wanted to go, just to see the process.
Scarily, the last person he spoke to in the experiment had an Australian accent.
Cheers

Yeah Gordo, I've seen some of your posts...its possible.  :D

C'mon, get up here and grab the van... its gotto go. ;D

Good scam, until they got busted.
I was reading the other day, in the States, one of the scams is to steal a high end car, something like a rare Yenko Camaro, Shelby Mustangs, Cadillac Eldo convertible's and then the bad guys, would take them back to shed, strip the things down and then dump the body shell where it would be found.

The car is found, the Insurance company pays out and then try's to auction off the almost bare shell.
The bad guys, then buy the shell back and receive a clear title for the car and get the thing back to their shed/barn.

Here, they reassemble car and stick it back out for sale for healthy profit.

A cop,(good guy) noticed on one of the shells, nothing was cut, all the wiring had been unplugged.
All the brake lines were undone rather than hacked etc. Someone had taken some care pulling it down.

So he followed them after the purchase of a shell and found a huge barn with a heap of cars in either assembly or disassembly stages.
The story went, they were putting out a couple of cars every couple of months.

From theft to a saleable car again was around a 6 to 8 month turn around.

Same thing was going on in VIC with HSV's and the like in the late 90's.  Guys were rebirthing 6 month old Clubsports for as little as 3K.

Hence why Vicroads now have a stolen and written off register. Those mint bare shells can no longer be re-registered.

New style scam mate just got the email on... LOL! Just as pathetic as the last 10000 efforts..

Quote
I'm afraid you dont know me but thats not the point of this email, i am contacting you regarding an urgent issue that requires your immediate  attention

I am a member of Elite Black Group and we setup a very aggressive malvware inside a porn website with adult videos

You accesed the website to watch videos and have some fun (you know what I mean, no problem with that, you have a good taste, lol)

While you were watching the video our virus started to work and setup your computer as a Remote Desktop. When this happened i had full control of your computer screen and your camera (yes i could see what you were watching along with your face and actions by your cam). We also collected all your contacts from Messengers, Social Networks, Emails.

So what i did next? Well, i started to record an live double-screen video (first part your screen sharing, second part your camera while watching porn)

You dont need to freak out, there is an easy way to fix all this mess and you will not have your privacy exposed:

All you have to do is pay me U$450 i think this is a fair value to keep our little secret safe.

You will make this payment by Bitcoin (if you dont know what is Bitcoin or  how to use it, just search "How to buy bitcoin" on internet, its easy). The wallet address you will send the money to is: _________Lots of numbers and letters_____________

You have only 24h from the time you read this email to make my payment

The boys from Windows technical department are really hammering me.

I usually hang up when there is silence but the last few days have stayed on to find out who is hassling me. I have had four calls this week.

Does anybody still fall for this stuff? I guess they do otherwise the call centres would give up.
Get a sports whistle and blow it down the phone, they soon F.... ..ff!

Been getting these notifications for a few days now.
Never had a Bitcoin and never Googled them, but the email is from
Outpayment <nieuwsbrief@mails.nedrlndnieuws4.com>

 and has this message

"This is an automated message
regarding your balance in
the Bitcoin Code.

Your payment is ready !

Thank you for your interest in our Bitcoin program.
We want to inform you that your Bitcoin bonus is now ready to be paid.

Account information
#5470eBTC:
Country: Australia
Balance in Bitcoins: $ 7380,67

Account expires: 10/01/2018"

Looks scammy, especially a value with a comma instead of a full stop between the dollars and cents, but I could use the $7380 if it was real.

Not a scam as such, but

Last thursday the combank app on my phone alerted me to a $5 transaction on my credit card to the smith family in Sydney, so whilst I'm looking up what it is the app tells me that I've just spent $399 at David Jones in Sydney umm nope not me so hit the block card function on the app straight away.

Ring combank and explain that the $5 and $399 are not me, and that they need to cancel the card straight away, guy at the other end of the phone is great and does what needs to be done, whilst talking to him he asks " did you just use your card for Myers online?" umm No and then he says "well I'm guessing you haven't just tried to set up a new paypal either then" um no

Anyway I made a note of the transaction numbers as they showed on the app and after a phone call to Myers and David Jones I now know what the gifts I bought myself are and where they are getting delivered!!

Three phone calls this week advising that we were involved in a minor car accident and they are investigating the deatails and we will be liable for an excess payment , if we don't pay the excess we will have to pay all retired costs.
When we have asked what vehicle, accident details etc, they hang up.

The supposed Telstra tecnhnicians and problems with your computer are now giving telstras phone number if you ask where their calling from. Trying to legitimise their scam

Have had similar things happen twice now. First time, somebody got my credit card details via wotif when we stayed at Port Douglas. This woman booked accommodation, flights and then decided to order a bunch of applicances and electronics from Harvey Norman. All up over $10k. Rang the hotel and they were able to tell me her name and the address she used to make the booking. Passed all this onto to westpac, they refunded my money and probably sent the boys in blue to check out her new stuff.

2nd time it started as a few small transactions I probably wouldn’t have noticed but then they got greedy and again spent up to the card limit which is when I noticed. Again westpac were very helpful and sorted it quickly.

Wow

Quote
An elderly man walked into a Commonwealth Bank in Sydney and transferred $171,000 to a UK account.

Staff noticed the transaction was unusual, and asked him what the money was for.

Confused, the man said he'd received an email asking for payment for computer parts and repairs.

Men over 50 are the most likely to be victims of scams, according to new data.

Bank staff quickly suspected he was the victim of a scam, and cancelled the transfer.

According to Commonwealth Bank data to be released at the National Elder Abuse Conference in Sydney on Monday, people over 50 are three times more likely than younger generations to be victims of these kinds of scams.

Those over 50 accounted for 76 per cent of victims in reported scams.

I check out Gumtree for vintage stereo gear, so am often searching through the electronics section. What annoys me is the amount of scammers trying to flog off "white van" speakers and home theatre gear. Makes me wonder if they actually suck anyone in these days, but I suppose there is always someone who can't resist a "bargain". Had a bit of fun with one of them yesterday:

Gee that's a really cheap price $300 for a new set of speakers with a MSRP of $2,999? Why are they so cheap?
I'm selling them for my Pop.
Did you tell him he shouldn't buy stuff from seedy characters out the back of a white van?
What do you mean about a white van?
Unscrupulous people that try to sell junk at ridiculously inflated prices, to unsuspecting people, from the back of a white van.
  They aren't junk... they're worth $2,999. I don't sell stuff from a van...
I got bored with it here and hit the message thread delete button. But he wasn't as bad as the bloke trying to sell a piece of junk projector for $1,000, that you can get under various brand names from the likes of Aliexpress, for under $150

What can you do to prevent this one? Why do they call you first?

Once they have your name and address from your letterbox/stolen mail/social media acoounnt, a little bit of digging to find your mobile number and a quick call to confirm.

Once they know your details, they port your phone number to a new phone that that all of those password reset SMS's go to them instead of you. That lets them potentially change all of your passwords for paypal, net banking, etc.

It won't replicate outside of their network...

This is the mob who specialise in ripping off pensioners by getting them to install remote control software, then showing you that you have a "virus" a on your machine, whilst in the background dropping a crypto locker on your PC, taking computers ransom in the process... They tried it on the computer I let them remote into, before they got their own back ...

They shouldn't try hacking a hacker :) (white hat not black hat)

Here's an email address that you can use for all of your dodgy websites and promotions:
cheri@vital-data.com

Cheri emailed me this morning trying to sell me peoples email addresses so they can get spamed.
That fact that Cheri has my email address says to me that my email address is also for sale.

So Cheri, I'm off to find a bunch of super creepy websites to sign you up to some mailing lists. I hope you enjoy all of the spam that's on it's way to your inbox......

I was watching y.ou tube the other day.
There was this guy who was being scammed by one of, shall we say, less than poor English.
When the scammer connected with the guys computer, he also allowed the guy to send the scammer a rather nasty package.

The scammer went off when his computer locked up and was now under the control of the guy he was trying to scam.

It would 've nice if it happened more often, but scammers are getting careful not to pick the ones who can do it to them.

Have had 3 calls today >:(

Not quite a robot voice, but not normal human either - almost as if they're talking into a speech changer thingie ???

"Hi this is Nicole from the Australian National Broadband Network. We have been trying but unable to get in contact with you. This is to advise that your internet & telephone will be disconnected withing 24 hours so you can be transferred to the NBN. Please press 1 to speak to the technician involved. Thank you"

Sorry, Nicole (who was Australian btw), but we've been on the NBN for almost 12 months now! >:D

I had no trouble at all resisting any urge to push one to speak to the technician ;D

Hi,
Any body who calls from 'Telstra' now gets asked for our account number and the amount of the last bill if they wish this conversation to continue.
They hang up very quickly.
Yes, I have memorised the number.

I had one today who I RAT'd and SYSKEY'd just after he ran the file he copied from my "Infected PC" called "login to online banking"...

Been watching a guy in YouTube lately who will take down every PC in the office the scammers connect to him from...

The sad thing is I don't believe half the people misrepresenting Telstra, NBN, Optus, etc believe they are doing anything bad, because they have been told by their superior that it's an honorable job to help others

Earlier this year fake PayPal and Optus texts and emails were being used to scam unsuspecting Australians, and now it looks like it's JB Hi-Fi's turn. A text message has been circulating from 'JBHiFi' that is definitely not from the retailer. Here's what you need to know.

The body of the SMS addresses the reader by name, stating that it is looking for testers in their local city and has signed them up. It is also accompanied by a link.

The retailer took to social media earlier today to warn people about the scam.
If you do receive a scam email or SMS from 'JB Hi-Fi' or a similar sounding suspect source, report it to Scamwatch and don't click on any unknown links. The site also offers advice and resources to those who have been victims of a scam.

Just received confirmation that Sophia Carter would like to be signed up for every spam email site that you can find.
That's;
sophia_carter@dbnow.net

She was kind enough to offer to sell me a full contact list of Autodesk users in Australia.
Considering that I am our Autodesk contract manager and Sophia has my email address, one would assume that my contact details are also up for sale.

Enjoy the spam Sophia.......

Just had a call (that came up saying it was from the US!) with a very robotic voice from "Service Australia" (note, not Services), telling me that my Tax File Number is about to be suspended due to apparent illegal activity! ::)

It was a time critical message which I had to act on immediately by pressing "1" now - instead, I pressed "End call"! ;D

I figure that if the ATO want to suspend my TFN, it's highly likely they would ring me themselves, rather than getting Centrelink to do so! ;D

Got a call Wed night around 6:30pm. Very heavy Indian accent (or somewhere near there) and an 02 XXX number. I could barely make out the words but did distinguish "Telstra" and "problem" so promptly hung up and went back to dinner.

Then an email came through.

Turns out it actually WAS a Telstra specialist tech calling me back about a fault at a client's site that I had logged during the day. Poor bugger. I apologised profusely and had a long chat.

Problem still unresolved.

Well I'm now soiling myself. Got a strange email over the weekend in sort of old school computer font...

We have your password (then nearly exactly my banking password) - give us 1100 or we will **** you up kinda Shit.. Didn't read it fully as it was in the SPAM folder, in fact it didnt register at first.. so I emptied the spam folder.

It wasn't 100% correct but 99% so I've changed that and Shitting myself on where they got it from.. All AV was up to date, run scans on the home PC and laptop, nothing has come up.. Will run malware-bytes and spybot (anyone recommend anything else?) when I get home.

I never bank on the phone, don't trust it at all. I've only banked on 2 PC's online. Work and Home. Both have up to date AV etc.

I've said it once I'll say it again I ****ing love going into a bank instead and going to a teller.

They don’t have your current information, but have close to it from a security breach that someone else has had. Various banks and large companies using banking services have been hacked and lost customers financial details over the years. This scam is common enough, because although people re-secure their passwords, you still keep the same contact details (your email address) and as most people’s passwords change very little, when they send you a message asking for cash, the information they have is close to your current information. Because you haven’t changed it enough. Trust me, if they really did have all you financial information, they would not ask for money, they would just empty your account.

After getting a similar email earlier in the year, I have now changed all of my passwords to completely different ones and each one is different to the others so obviously I have no chance of remembering them now. I have stored the new passwords on my phone as a protected document and used the old fashioned paper hard copy at home, just in case the phone dies.

Caravan and motorhome scammers target Australians during the coronavirus pandemic

Carolyn Robertson never saw herself as the kind of person who would buy a caravan.

But with a trip to Queensland cancelled in May and no international travel on the horizon, she and her husband Laurie figured it might be a way to get away once Victoria's lockdown lifted.

"I said to my husband, 'if we don't like it, what's the worst that can happen? We sell it again'," she said.

Instead, the Robertsons paid more than $10,000 for a caravan that never arrived from a website called Acecaravancampers.com.

"I emptied our savings," Ms Robertson said.

"It basically left us with nothing

It may have been covered in the previous 12 pages, but if not there are a few companies/websites advertising used tractors for sale.
These are generally only up to 20 years old, good brands, free Aussie delivery, and half the price of real ones.
There was one in Rockhampton called Russel's machinery but no phone answers and a drive-by of the address shows a vacant site far too small for the advertised tractors. Another one based in Melbourne with the holding yard at Boulia. Google Earth images of the addresses show part acre industrial sites. One called Efarmtractors is based at Eden, but a phone call to a neighbouring business advised that address is bushland.
The photo's shown have different backdrops and look to be from dozens of areas, but different websites have some of the same machines.
These people will take a deposit but are booked out 3 to 4 weeks in advance for an inspection quoting virus concerns. If you want a 6 year old 50HP John Deere with a loader and backhoe for $18 000 look carefully.

Yeah, trying to find a post on our local group as an example, but cant find it now.

Some scammer  posted up a pic of a brand new Jeep Gladiator, advertised as a Wrangler, for $25k or so.

Within half an hour, one of the local members dumped a multiple screenshot of 12 different FB group adds for the same vehicle for sale, all exactly the same except the location.  The adds
were in groups based in every state of Australia....

What gets me is sheeple fall for this stuff....   ???

After a little advice/help.  I advertised an item on Gumtree.  A person has offered my the asking price.  I told them I would only accept payment via Paypal and they have requested my email address.  If that's all I give them, am I safe?
Thanks

Yeah,
Cheers mate, I've always renewed through the Gov site.
4 odd years ago, I nearly got scammed.
Being busy & new to being a sole trader, something didn't seem right, so I rang the Gov site contact No, they confirmed it was a scam.

Possibly not a real scam, just an enterprising company that is happy to charge you $100 to fill in an online form instead of you having to devote 10 minutes of your precious time.

Hi everyone, just received an email purporting to be from MyGov advising an adjustment to an income tax return, you must verify your details, DO NOT PUSH THE BUTTON.

Couple of things smelt fishy, 1, the mail came from MyGov, not my.gov.au, 2, it stated the financial year ending the 13th December, 3, it came to a very old email address no longer in use for anything of any importance. 4, no mention of the Australian Tax Dept.

I immediately checked both of our my gov au accounts and no email, there’s a bloody surprise.

Unless it actually has your name in the body of the email then it is almost guaranteed to be spam.

I get heaps of them with my email "name" (minus the @yahoo.com.au)

Today's was about a delivery from an online store.  No mention of the store name. eg Amazon, ebay

Five years ago I was scammed with an ATO scam .
Rang the ATO and advised them of the scam to which they told me it was a new one and they were on to it. They then told me that any tax advice, queries, or any thing related to your tax is only ever done by paper., NEVER electronically. The lass on the phone then told me that she would send a paper document to me with all the relevant information I could or would need for future reference . I also now have voice recognition with the Tax Office.

What could possibly go wrong.....   Todays email...

Hello

How are you? I hope you are fine and doing great. I am sorry for coming to you this way, but this is the only means to communicate with you and I hope you will see reason to contact me back after reading this email. I want to share an important information with you, all I ask is that you read this email carefully, understand what I am saying and I need your honest discresion. You may want you to know that, this may cause me my job if words get that I leak out this information, so I need somebody that I can trust and someone who is honest too. My name is Suren Kanthasamy, an Australian living in the United States and work as head of luggage/baggage storage facilities (Operations, Maintenance,
Transportation) at Los Angeles International Airport - L.A.X, USA.

During my recent withheld package routine check at the Airport Storage Vault last year December 2021, I discovered an abandoned shipment which I personally recorded when a Diplomat from Australia flew in October 2020 and when it was scanned, it revealed an undisclosed sum of money in a Metal Trunk Boxes weighing approximately 720kg.

The consignment was held on hold because the Contents of the consignment was not properly declared by the consignee as "MONEY"
rather it was declared as personal effect to avoid interrogation and after investigation was complete, the diplomat was fine but the inability of the diplomat to pay for the United States Non Inspection Charges of $5,700.00, he abandon it because he was later rushed to the hospital for suspision of having Covid-19.

The content of the boxes has since been deposited with a bank after report confirmed, the death of the diplomat a month after from Covid-19 complications, leaving no trace or information of any relatives or next of kin. So the reason why I am contacting you is, for you to work with me and act as his next of kin, because you both share the same last name. I will arrange for all documents that you need to present to the autorities at the airport, so that they would know that you are the next of kin to the deceased. The bank will hand over all the money to you by transferring it to your bank account but you have to assure me that, once you receive the funds, it will be share equally.

I wait to hear from you urgently and I will appreciate if we can keep this deal strictly confidential. You might think of it as illegal but it's not, because if no one comes to make claim on it, the government will claim it after 3yrs, so it's not illegal, I just need your support and join me to make claim on it. please get back to me via my private Email:
(hayleeschowalter736@gmail.com) for further directives.

Thanks,

Suren Kanthasamy

How easy,
This morning I get an email(which looked the same as every other one) from web host. I needed to renew my hosting, ssl certificate.
As I have done for many years, click on the 'Renew' icon.
Enter my card details, next screen, enter the verification code sent to your registered mobile number.
No text, no button to resend.

A little bell rang.
Cancelled the window.
Rang my hosting provider, logged into my account.
Life gets busy, hosting and associated services doesn't need to be renewed.
It's a scam.
Ring CBA, cancel card, told it is repent.
I'm pretty onto this Shit, just tired, slipped through.
Now to change all the direct debts.

for a while now my spam & crap has been pretty quiet, but over the last few weeks it has blown up. Multiple emails every day all offering unbelievable "investment" opportunities. Usually with some sort of endorsement from some sort of media personality.

Couldn't work out why the spam had suddenly become so active, but then got an email (which appears to be legitimate) from Big W -
Quote
Dear Valued Customer,

At BIG W, your privacy is our priority and we have robust security measures in place to safeguard your information and actively monitor for any suspicious activity. During these routine checks, we found some suspicious activity which we are confident originates from outside BIG W. Whilst we have investigated the activity, we wanted to inform you that your login details have been accessed and used to login to your BIG W online account without your permission. The personal information you have shared with BIG W, such as your name and contact details, may also have been viewed. Information on how to safeguard your personal information is included in this email

Guess I now know why I'm suddenly being scammed.

Thankfully my Big W account is just the one you need to print photos from their kiosk and it's not associated with any purchase activity, but it's another example of why you shouldn't use the same password for everything (which I don't).

For the IT crew,
How does an email reach your in box and it's not your servers address?
It may have the address in front of the @
Right, but not the rest.
I have contacted my Web Host, they can't answer why their spam/virus doesn't pick it up, but it gets delivered to my inbox.

I didn't think of it at the time, but a while back my wife parked at the local supermarket, and while she was sitting in the parked car, the car parked in the spot in front reversed back into her. You can clearly see on the dash cam that my wife was stopped at the time, and hear my missus honking the horn at the sheila in the car in front of her before she hit. My mrs got out and gave the woman a mouthful, and pointed to the dash cam in her car.

I don't know if it was an attempted scam, but there was bugger all damage done to either car, just a scuff on the wife's roo bar. But the woman didn't have her drivers licence on her, and gave a false name and address anyway, as we found out when I googled the address.

Goes to show though, that it does pay to have a dash cam.
