Computer help for a sef taught computer klutz
« on: March 14, 2020, 01:44:57 PM »
Q :  I have a computer, now running Win 10 [ used to be Win 7 before 10 installed itself ] .
What I am intending to do is disconnect the existing hard drive and fit up a spare blank HD ..  Start up and instal the original  Win 7 OEM that I have and use that as a stand alone set up to run  NON  Win 10 compatible older software .. Ie for games only etc , wil not be connected to the net ..
Then shut down and reconnect the Win 10 HD when we want to use the computer as normal .

BIG Question is Tech Gurus, would / could this do anything to change  the existing settings  of other things etc / ram ?? what ever that Win 10 has set for its normal use  ??   ..
Yes it would probably be easier to partician the HD and switch between Win 7 & Win 10, dont  want to attempt that, Also I have heard it can cause problems doing that wayon some compters ..
Thank you in advance ..
Sounds like an agricultural way to do it,  but thats the way I roll .

Have a look for "duel Booting" not super difficult or you could set up a "virtual machine" in win10 and run win7 on that inside win10

There is also a setting in the properties of the games to run As and you can run them as though they are in an older version of windows yetbyou are still in Win10

Are you sure that your required software won’t run in windows 10?

Would be a bit unusual, to be honest...

I’d be looking more at a virtual machine solution... easier to implement and work with than a dual boot, IMO...

Example here of what I mean...

Thanks fella's . Will do a bit more tube searching on those ideas .... Yep tried the games etc using  all the Win 10 compatability bits still no go .. Hence going this way .
Win 10 tells me it cant open the files / folders needs to know what programs it was installed with etc ..
Win 7 ran them fine  before the Win 10 invasion  .

was it a windows 10 upgrade, or a fresh installation of windows 10...

I've not seem much that wont run on a good install of 10.
Plenty of options for what you want, even external hard drive caddys - plug em in USB style :)

The better halfs computer is running Windows 10.  Also running Windows xp in virtual mode allowing her to use a Family  Tree program called Reunion, there were no more  updates for this program for windows, the last update was in 1996  A old school program but brilliant.

Here is a free program (of sorts) that runs on Windows or Mac and is supposed to be very good.  Maybe worth a look..

Birdman, Its the Win 10 that self installed  during an automatic microsoft  update.  Our security program has'nt picked up anything subversive  .....   tried Win 10's compatability modes / trouble shooting etc just says it dont recognize the OS / programs etc something or other cant open the files .
Doing net searched on these program / games etc theres a lot out there that are having the same issues and yet others are having no troubles apparently .. Dont know about the tech of these things  so just going the way Im thinking of doing it .

If you know anyone whose decent with  computers, get them to back up everything and do a fresh installation of Windows 10. not an update from 7. May work, may not.

Win 10 dosn't install without someone pushing the mouse to agree.

Have you tried a system restore before it all happened

Yep, it used to if you had auto updates enabled.

My "old" win 7 comes up with update msg's sometimes....I don't even check what they are...just delete..
