Title: Holiday of a lifetime
Post by: areyonga on August 29, 2010, 04:55:19 PM
Hello fellow swaggers, I have been lurking around the site for a short time and find its an excellent forum for gaining experience and help from fellow travellers.  My wife and I have been caravaners for many years but with a large amount of long service leave and a yearning to go back and travel the red centre we have decided to sell the van and have just purchased a camper trailer and 4x4 and planning on a few short breaks around the local area before heading to the centre for 12 weeks early next year.

We used to live in Alice Springs and travelled the centre extensively, and like many say, once you have been there its hard to get it out of you system.  So we are planning on about 11,000klm with about half being dirt ie Plenty Hwy, old Gunbarrel, Tanami Track and Oodnadatta Track to name the main ones.

I will try and load some pics of my rig and trailer, which I hope will do the job without problems.  I also hope to meet other swaggers along the trek and it would be good to have some company on some of the tracks like toe old Gunbarrel but I expect its reasonable busy these days.  Will put some more info as time goes by.

Cheers
Wil

G'day & Welcome Will.

That's a good setup, can't go part a Cruiser.

I expect the cruiser will cost me for fuel but its a 2000 model petrol 4.5L and only done 120,000klm, its also on Lpg but still thirsty.  The upside is it was only used to run the kids to school by one owner and has never been off road, so I dont expect many mechanical issues, drives like a new car.

Hi Wil, and welcome to the forum.  I am from Mackay but I am presently sweating it out at Darwin in my Jayco Dove Outback, but on Tuesday I will be off to Daly Waters for 4-5 days, and then to Borroloola and King Ash Bay for 6-8 weeks fishing.

Cheers mate and happy travels.

Hell Graylyn
You know how to make a fella feel bad, I live in Canberra and and it freezing with winds direct off the Snowys.  This is the first day for a while that the sun showed any sign of improvement.

Have fun and catch a few for me.

I like the battery setup. Did Xtrail do that or did you have to pay extra for moving it and so forth?

Looks good, getting giddy about mine now.

Interesting to see that the cables run on the outside of the draw bar, how is it supported.

Looks good though, i must admit.

WogsRus
Here is the pic of the jerry can holders you asked for.  The three jerry cans and 2 gas bottles are protected behind the front box, I prefer them both outside due to possible leaks.

Looks nice and sturdy, i see they have changed the location of the tie down strap, use to be on top and would rub the cans, this way nice and out of the way.

Thanks Very much for the pics, much appreciated

I think it is certainly a good looking trailer, will be interested to see what the people think of it in the flesh.

XTRAIL NAVIGATOR Limited Edition had been to an offroad trip with 4WD Action experts. Review will be published on Camper Trailer Touring Feb 2011.

By next camping show in Melbourne (March 2011), we should have 2~3 new models showing. Two hard floor models and one mid range offroad package.

Watch out  ;D

I am looking forward to seeing the hard floor models, the only setback is usually a bit less storage area than the soft floor models.

Keep them coming Sam.

Welcome to the forum.   What an awesome trip you are planning.  I'm green with envy and drooling all over the keyboard.  hahaha
We have our first ct on order - arriving end of Feb.  We have been tent campers for years and can't wait to step up to a camper trailer.  Our first big trip will be in July,  over to Katherine where our son and family live (he's a Raafie at Tindal) and then together a trip back across the Gulf.  We are sooooo looking forward to it.
Look forward to hearing about your adventures.  Love the look of your camper.
Cheers   :D :D

I will be coming up your way in 2012 but I need to get over this next trip first then decide if I am going to retire, Hmmmmmmmmm  that does sound good  "retire" even better the second time.  When do you get your CT?

"Retire" - don't you just love that word. We're hoping to do that in a few short years from now and then there'll be lots and lots of camping trips.   We've ordered a Trackabout Safari camper and we get it end of Feb.  Might sound odd, but our choice not to have it sooner.  Camping in summer in the tropics is just not on I'm afraid - can't stand the humidity.  Mind you, end of Feb won't be any better and will be in the middle of our wet season too.  I think we are in for a very long wet season - today has been a classic - and we have already had one of the wettest Septembers and Octobers and November is heading for the same.
Do look us up if you are up this way in 2012 - mind you, we are planning long service then and could be on our way to Broome. haha
Have a good weekend.
Cheers
Sharyn  :D
