Theres a real need for a good show along the lines of *gulp* - the Leyland Brothers where they show places etc without 98% of the show being an infomercial..

Sadly the infomercials fund these shows now. The TV stations aren't interested in funding shows if they can just license the broadcast rights.

It's probably more the legislative requirement to have 55% content between 6am and midnight being local content. Those reality shows are cheaper to make and putting on Masterchef for 1-2 hours every day and then repeating on One HD goes a long way to hitting their quota. Stick a few cameras on a  cop and then edit the hours of footage is way cheaper than making some thing like underbelly or any other drama. .

Half of Pats show is him talking about his sponsors products.....drives me mad.

Jason & Simon produce a great show. A couple of real larakin's. All 4 Adventure is always good for a giggle...

I have some insight into this... (but a contract signed a few years back means I can't mention "names")

Aussie free to air stations have a legal requirement to broadcast a certain % of Australian produced content per week, month, year.

4wd person, goes to them and says "I'll deliver you a professionally produced and edited show for FREE, I just need your guarantee that it will be shown in certain (reasonably) popular timeslots"

TV station says, "sure... show me your trailer/teaser for the show"

4wd person, then approaches 4wd manufacturers, parts importers, trailer manufacturers and so on and asks them for cash (and product) sponsorship, using the agreement that he has with TV station to promise a number of potential viewers for the show.

So basically... the 4wd person needs the sponsors money to finance the production of the show. But that only works if the TV station guarantees to air the show in a reasonable timeslot for the sponsors to get their perceived value from it.

it's all a juggling act. But the end result of this is... no sponsors... no show.

And to be clear... I don't the like the endless infomercials throughout the shows either. Shits me to tears.

My personal gripe right now is each of the 4wd/camping/travel shows having their own sponsor for camper trailers and so each of them promotes the begeezus out of that brand. Apparently their brand can do no wrong. (which is total bullShit and we all know that)

*grumble winge grumble*

Mostly true, but as stated all4adventure is the exception, they don't ram their sponsors products in segments, sure they have advertising on their shirts, cars and at the end of the show but I can live with that, jase shows it can be done and be profitable for all involved

Gotta be the best show on tv right now, and poor pat has to come on right after highlighting how monotone and boring his show has become.....

Ep 5 of the current series of All 4 Adventure in on 10Play....These guys flog the crap out of their kit with minimal if no direct produce selling...(apart from at the end)

IMHO, the combination of Jase and Simon is a winner. Jase has a great presence in front of the camera, not drab or monotone and Simon, the right hand man and side kick, creates a good veiwing experience.  Its a clever combination.

I'm thinking next time I cant sleep, I will listen to Pats voice...Surely that got to send me to the land of zzzzzz's

have to agree with ya there Elky.

Though I'll be honest and say that I'd prefer more 4wding/adventuring and less boats/fishing in all4adventure. Then I'd like a it even more.

They do seem to be having a bit of trouble with these new 200series cruisers though, watched ep5 last night and they cooked the tranny in one of them, could have something to do with the massive weight they are carting though.

Recent Sunday evenings have seen repeats of Russell Coight's All Aussie Adventures which brilliantly lampoons this genre.  When I watch Jase and Simon using a chain saw or climbing rocks in their thongs I'm just waiting for them to sustain an injury (though I guess they'd never actually show it).  Whether it's All 4 Adventure or Pat's show - I am totally over then deliberately bogging their vehicles so they can show us how to use a snatch strap, treds, or winch ... again.

Bird, got to agree with you there.

I know we all cringe  to watch them now, but Mike & Mal did a bloody good job of showing the country off.

We've got a few sets of both Ted Egan & Jack Absolom on DVD that we watch every once in a long time - same thing, great shows that go to one particular area & highlight everything about it, but they're now well & truly showing their age - early 80's!

Is there any new version of these sorts of show?

C'mon I think Simon Christie has Pat Callinan covered for the most montone and boring presenter on TV.

Our community channel here in Adelaide shows Penny Wells On Top of Down Under which is better than both mentioned above.

So if I had to rank the current lot:

1. Russell Coight
2. All 4 Adventure
3. Penny Wells
4. 4WD Touring Australia - where has Carlisle been lately???
5. Pat Callinan
6. What's Up Down Under
100. Simon Christie's rubbish

What do you think?

Lol well said Mr Personality Christie is as boring as batShit, I'd rather suck farts out of dead seagulls than watch his Shit. Don't mind Penny they go to some pretty good spots. There can only be one Russel Coight :cup: and bring Roddo back ;D
Carlisles show is always a good watch, good bunch of blokes too

6. Pat Callinan

Forgot Roothy!

I only saw the first ep of his where they were practically bush bashing up the beach.

Also need to include the Offroad Adventure Show.

There are a few players in the market!!!

No matter how bad Simon Christie is....    its his sidekick that is the total right off. ...

Years ago we would watch them and roll around laughing our heads off....   the side kick's mouth did not even EVER move when he was talking. ....

We've got a half decent camera that I film all of our offroad and touring adventures with. I've been a bit slack on the editing duties lately and am a year or two, or five :-[ behind, but if I ever get to a Myswag meet, would be more than happy to do my part.
I much prefer being behind the camera than in front of it ;D

Somehow managed to find myself in front of the TV a few Saturday's ago and saw pats 4x4 show on. First episode I've seen in ages and Nows he's driving a new VW dual cab.
Seems his show has turned into a recovery techniques program the amount his and his crew car were getting stuck.
Used to be a Patrol pulling out stuck cruisers in the older series. That was much better to watch😄
Still Wouldn't mind winning the prize he is giving away of a new amarok and caravan.
