New Camping Regulations For Twin Falls / Elliot Falls
« on: October 01, 2011, 11:41:27 AM »
The National Parks have now decided that you have to book on line to camp at Twin Falls as from Feb 2012.
Naturally on their website this area is not registered as yet so you cannot book until Feb 2012.

http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks/jardine-river/camping.html#camping_in_heathlands_resources_reserve

As they only have 9 camper trailer sites this is always a problem. I can see some problems here with campers not knowing that you have to book and campers who have booked turning up.

I would suggest we camp where we did on the last trip at the linesmans hut near Canal creek as there are a number of sites around that area but with no toilets. You can do the short drive to twin falls approx 500mtrs to use the toilets.

Like any place at the Cape it will depend on how many other campers are there and what space is available. Walking around Canal Creek this year there are a large number of spots on both sides of the creek to camp so I cannot see a problem. Everyone enjoyed Canal Creek as the water was cystal clear and only a very short walk from our camp.

I have just read someone's rant about experiences with the NP booking system this year. Apparently the touchscreen booking system at the ranger stations isn't working. The campsites are showing up online as being booked, but the sites are actually sitting vacant as people have been overbooking the number of nights they need to cover for any delays or changes to their itineraries. The rangers are not taking any bookings on the ground, and some of the staff at the booking office don't even know the names of most of the National Parks on the Cape, and haven't been able to find them on their system, though that may be due to some of the parks changing names recently back to their aboriginal names.

I haven't heard of any fights over campsites yet, so lets hope the frustrations on the Cape stay focused where they belong.

As much as everyone wants that authentic camping travelling experience, it is getting to the point with all of the Nomads hitting the road, an the fact that these issues will only increase, they might have to consider opening up other options or spending some money on infrastructure.

The way this is going by the time I am ready to hit the road with the kids everything will be booked 2 years in advance.

Regards

Jas
